My PowerBook G4 was getting a bit long in the tooth, so yesterday I headed to the Apple Store to buy a new MacBook Pro.
Two minutes with the glossy screen, and I headed for home, empty handed. Now to search for a prior-generation MacBook Pro with a matte screen.

I guess once you buy a MBP from an Apple Store, you can take it back within a couple of weeks if you don't like it, right?
So maybe we should buy one, try it out. If the glossy screen is unbearable (which I reckon it will be) then take it back.
If Apple suddenly receives tons of MBPs being returned and having to be re-stocked, and everyone telling them the reason was the glossy screen, they may have to think again...

I'm on day 15 (missed just a couple of days) of my Apple Email A Day campaign and I've received nothing but a feedback request on their feedback support. You can guess what kind of feedback I gave them.
I like the idea of everyone going out and buying and computer, then returning it. That would drive them crazy! But what about that 10% restocking fee for opened products? Not sure I'm willing to pay $110 for returning a new Macbook.
Other ideas?

Hi Everyone,
Because Apple has not even discussed the possibility of bringing back the matte, I think it is gone. I would agree with the person who suggested it was probably an environmental issue. If you want a matte screen, and you have to have a new Apple, get practice at installing a screen cover.
If you still want to change Apple's mind, don't bother writing to Apple or Mr. Jobs. From Apple's website you can download the annual report, in it you will find a list of the board of directors (one of which heads Avon, another J. Crew). These are the people Mr. Jobs has to answer to and I think writing them would at least cause them to investigate. Remember to hand write the address so it will get noticed, but I think it's still a long shot.
Aloha

That's a good point Steve In Hawaii; sending to the board. Maybe we should put together all the responses we can find into one single letter to the board. I'll write a letter (hand written) and print out all these responses. Maybe it would be big enough to be considered a book. Will that get the attention of the board? And then good old Steve? It may be a long shot, but if nothing is done about this, we can be guaranteed that we'll never see a Matte screen again. Worth a shot in my book.
If everyone who reads this wants to send a complaint, send it my way (tobinrogers@gmail.com). Tell all your Mac buddies that we're trying to get Matte back. I'll take care of the project. We'll make our voices heard.
I will continue my Apple Email A Day. I think it's rediculous to not receive feedback even once. My venture is almost less about the matte screen now as it is about just receiving a response. In a year I'll probably still be writing these feedbacks to them, but what an interesting story it will be to hold against Apple; not that I want to be against them.

My first Mac in 15 years and having waited this year for the new models I was forced to buy an early 08 MBP to get a matte screen.
In fact I was so disappointed by the launch of the glossy only products I went and bought a Eee 901 netbook while I calmed down. It had a matte screen and huge battery life not to mention an SDHC card reader. The kids love it and it gets used all the time. I'm not drawing comparisons an Eee and MacBook are for different things all together. After a few weeks I had adjusted to the fact that I would have to buy an early 08 MBP which I did.
We should have a name for ourselves those that bought old models simply for the matte screen. Maybe we could form a club and post photos on flickr of MBPs being used in various settings and no glare to be seen?

Good news some of you not yet informed, the new 17" Macbook Pro comes with an optional antiglare display.
17" MBP specs
I imagine the next 15" MBP will follow suit and would hope the 15" MB will too.
Seems Apple has heard our cries.

We've discussed this announced machine here before (I believe in this very comment thread). The 17" is not a matte screen; it's an "anti-glare" option. Until seen in person, I'm reserving judgment on it -- they had but one at Macworld Expo, and those conditions were far from ideal to evaluate the screen.
Apple has said nothing about migrating the option to the 15" -- and I long ago never to assume anything about the company's future plans :).

[~101050], I think you're way out on a limb to assume that just because they're offering the option on the 17" model that they'll offer it on the 15" model. They just updated the 15" model, and so I wouldn't expect any more updates to that product for 6 to 12 months. Plus, Apple seems content to have the 17" MBP always be sorta different than the 15" MBP. But we're all speculating, and only time will tell.
