What am I missing here? I have been able to do this with GarageBand for FREE!

Still looking for a tool that can quickly create clips with fade in and out's like iTunes does for rigntones. I work with several bands and need to create hundreds of 20 to 30 second clips.
I love how iTunes automatically creates the fades and easily lets you select the start and end points while keeping track of the clip playback time.

What you are missing is this. GarageBand is part of iLife and iLife is not "FREE" unless you buy a new Mac.

Regardless, I own Fission and use it for my basic editing needs. Had I not read this story, I wouldn't have known immediately that I could now use it (as well as GB) to make ringtones. For me, Fission is much easier to use.

I make my iPhone ringtones with iTunes. Beats me why you'd pay $33 for this instead of using iTunes or Audacity for free.

While fission is not as full featured as audacity, I had to login here to say that Rogue Amoeba does a great job with their software. I bought fission because I already had audio hijack pro and nicecast and both of those apps are great. I always thought "gee I wish they made an audio editor" and then they released fission. It's still a bit rough around the edges but I'm hoping that with support it will continue to improve.
What really made me a RA fan was when I had a problem with Audio Hijack Pro and I had a week long email tech support thread going with them. I can't tell you another time I've found tech support to be so helpful. I mean this is for pretty cheap software overall (30ish bucks?) And yet they provided me with support that surpasses companies who have gotten hundreds of dollars out of me (verizon, for example).

I Must “chime” in here! Fission is a one of a kind program, that I find indispensable in my workflow. It performs one simple function that neither Pro Tools nor logic will. You can open very large audio files, snip it into regions, and save, without having to render, or bounce the file. A true “Save as” that even allows you to change formats, without realtime rendering. This comes in very handy when I record hours of live audio with my solid state field recorder, and end up with, at times multi GB files. You can then bring the desired regions into your favorite editing or mixing program. Why bloat your Protools or Logic sessions with these huge files? It is a simple and well engineered complementary program. The $32 was a no brainer for me.
