Re: leather cases, I wanted something durable that could be worn on my belt.
Went out and bought a Nutshell case a month ago, and have been very pleased with it. Got the belt loop rather than the belt clip option (you can order it without any belt option), and it's worked great.
It's pricey, but the New Zealand company that makes them lets you customize your case. And the quality of my case is very impressive. Since I want a case that lasts for years, this is worth the extra $$.

Sena cases are made of really cheap leather. I had ordered one and it was an enormous hassle to return. Buyer beware!

It is not true to state that Sena cases are made from cheap leather. I have two cases from Sena, the slip-on glove design and the harder leather slip-on with belt adaptor. In both, the leather quality, feel and appearance is of the highest standard. Believe me, I've seen some cheap and nasty leather cases in the past. Sena's offerings are among the best I have seen. I have not inspected the wallet case reviewed here, but I would buy without hesitation based on my experience.

In Canada, Roots (the sports clothing folks) make a nice leather case that has a flip down front so you can use the iPhone without removing it from the case. Downside is that it has no cover for the face but a piece of the Logiix protector solved that.

I have the ivyskin XyloT3 case and the editor is 100% correct. This is is an amazing case. I went through many cases for my iphone and iPhone 3G, till I got Xylo. It's very different both in manufacturing and design. It provides the iPhone with the best protection while still looking sharp.
I would highly recommend this case if you're serious about protecting your 3G.

I'd like a case that is slim and covers the dock connector. I keep my phone in my pocket and sometimes the dock connector gets pocket lint in it which I have to remove with a tooth pick. Are there any cases that can cover the dock connector?

Three cases... you call THAT a roundup? That's barely enough to be called a collection. It's nothing, it's a dent in the market. LAME. Get to work.

I would have to agree about Sena. I bought a UltraSlim from Sena and the lining came apart from the leather after a month as its only glued to the leather and not stiched. Also the leather is very thin around 1mm thin or less. So I didn't make a second purchase from Sena after that blunder. I found the same design but handemade in New Zealand by www.IkonicEdge.com and named the SuperSlim. Its handmade and at least 2mm thick leather and there is no comparrison between the two. Its also hand stictched and the lining will never come away from the leather. It feels so much better to hold and it just looks like a much better pouch.

One of the issues with carrying cases for the iPhone (at first place with belt clip ones) is that they are not most convenient when taking the iPhone out, mostly because of the iPhone's form-factor (relatively large and thin). The manufacturers don't address this issue at their best.
The workaround could be use of an opening in a front panel of a hard carrying case as shown somewhere in the internet.

This approach would add more convenience and elegance to carrying the iPhone indeed.
