in terms of sound quality, there should be no difference between a digital coax cable and an optical cable since they're both digital. I assume a converter wont affect any quality as well as long as data is transmitted from your WD player output to your philips system as long as your converter is powered. That should extend the signal even on long cables by try to minimize the cable length as much as possible if you don't need it. I think Amazon sells the converter for around 18 bucks.

U r an angel.
I will be keeping the WD and Philip next to each other. I am planning to buy these:

Coupla requests for the first firmware upgrade.
1> Able to go to last viewed area on Menu system rather than always defaulting to Photo. We mainly use ours for video and would be nice to even choose the default in Setup.
2> Add my support for some means of jumping faster through larger videos. I support the idea someone put here of arrows up/down 5 minute jumps arrows across 10 minute jumps. 8 and 16 times are just not enough and pretty unreliable on large mpgs and avis.
Finally how do you get those pretty thumbnail views on video files?
All in all a great product. Excellent replacement for my ageing Mediagate MG-25

i've decided against getting one of these. i'm waiting until they add some sort of networking and or i get $99 bucks i don't care about. There's also a netgear device coming out where you can add your own hard drive http://www.engadget....ays-hello-to-t/
i'm curious to see how it is.
So come on WD. I know you just released it but this thread is proof that there is room for improvement and expansion. The game is a foot. Let's get to updating and improving.

Is it just me or are other people having issues with Handbrake encoded files with the AppleTV preset? This is the two track AC3 + AAC and I can only get the stereo output to play (i.e. no Dolby Digital).
Is this a bug or something which is needed to be added to a feature request?

So some more issues I've run into with this thing and wondering if I'm doing something wrong.
Audio files~
- I have a fairly large audio collection and to navigate it seems to take forever....30 sec to sometimes up to a minute. Seems to lock up or something then lets go. Unusable!
- I know cover art is from embedded tags but you gotta be kidding me if people are okay with only seeing cover art of an album on the song and not on the album itself when navigating in.
- Once I navigate into an artist folder it doesn't show the artist name. Or when I navigate into the album it won't show the artist and album (what if I walk away and come back -- I can't see who I was playing).
- Search
Video issues~
- no genre?
USB issues~
- If I unplug and plug back in the USB drive (HFS+), say to add some files to it, it takes awhile for the drive to be recognized. Up to ten minutes sometimes. With no net access this is a pain if I have new stuff I want to watch right away.
These with my my previously posted .m4v issues, really are pushing me to reconsider my purchase. Yeah it's great I can play those hi-def movies but I don't have too many of them. Compared to XBMC, or even the native AppleTV navigation, it feels like I'm using DOS compared to Mac OS X. Like another poster said this feels like a beta and I think they need to do a lot of work on the GUI and the speed.

i don't have one so i can't help but could you elaborate on the speed navigating audio issues. i have a 150 GBs of audio and currently use an xbox 360. or should i say i don't use it for the very reason that it's slow and difficult to navigate by genre. are you having similar issues. mine takes forever to load of songs when you'd think it would be instant.
i'm not sure i understand the album art issue. personally i only have imbedded album art.
Question: with audio. can you navigate like this, genre, artist, album, song? You know just like in Appletv or an ipod? I don't use my xbox because it goes like genre, album, artist. but i've got maybe 5000 singles in one genre. That's 5000 albums i've that i don't even know (because if they were good i'd have got the whole album). So i hate that. the list is massive and slow.
i have a bunch of hd video on the other had. personally for xbox 360 i encode all video in one of three methods and they almost always work. Maybe there is a way to reencode your problem video to a better codec/container combination with settings that you know work and can always fall back on? just a thought. it's made my life easier. Still have issues dealing with adding subtitles though. such a pain.

i think i get what you mean about album art. check this out. fast forward to 2:08 http://www.youtube.c...feature=related
it seems like the folders load art really slow and many albums don't display any. Are you saying it's not displaying them on the folder even thought there is art embedded in the song? if so that sucks because all my audio is like that.
another question, for photos to you tell it which folders to use or does it search all because my crappy xbox 360 searches all and adds album art that's in my audio folders to my photo library. (That's actually why i ended up deleting most of the existing folder art). there's still some there though so it looks bad. i just don't enable the photo function now.

I have a large audio database, too (around 70GB), and I use a workaround to navigate into the audio files.
I use the ITUNES folder structure, instead of using tags. I disabled the library, and I use to navigate into files only thru folders (artist/album/song) and it works. I can find my music in seconds.
yes, I lost the ability to find music via tags, but really I never used it, neither on MP3 players (Ipod or Zune).
I can confirm the long delay (up to 10 minutes) needed to discover an HD when you connect to the device, but it seems not related to formatting of disk. I use 2 x 1TB NTFS disks (1 WD and 1 Seagate), and on the WD I can see the HD light "flashing" during this delay. When it finished, the light on the HD stops to blink and I can see the device discovered my HD. Maybe some kind of indexing ?
Regarding the muxing in M2TS already described here, I found that the same problem discovered with a MKV with DTS audio stream, can be found also in some DVD Video_TS with AC3 stream audio. I tried to mux DVD into M2TS, just a couple of minutes on my dual core PC, and the WD device plays it without a glitch. So M2TS will be my preferred video format :)
Hope this help.
ciao
