ScottWD --
Two very prevalent "mainstream codecs" that the WD TV DOESN'T play correctly are:
1. The DV (digital video) AVI captured from MiniDV camcorders by popular home editing programs such as Pinnacle Studio and Vegas Movie Studio. The WD TV doesn't recognize this AVI format at all. MiniDV camcorders have been the best selling camcorders for years. It amazes me that the WD TV doesn't support the DV format.
2. The M-JPEG (motion JPEG) videos captured from the Canon line of digital still cameras that also capture video. The WD TV DOES play this VIDEO, but the playback SOUND is distorted. Canon is one of the most popular brands of digital cameras. It amazes me that the WD TV doesn't support the Canon M-JPEG format.
3. From the reviews I also find that the WD TV will not play files named with the MTS extension but if the file is just renamed with an M2TS extension then it will play OK. How annoying is that! Also, how difficult can it be to add the ability to play clips with the MTS extension as well as the M2TS clips?

One of the major competitors, TviX 6500/7000, can now support playing BD ISO,
I'm wondering whether there'll be any more firmware upgrade of WD TV or not?
It's OK (though disappointing) that if further development has ended, but please
let us know so that people don't have to put their comments here again. Thanks!

You might wanna reset your HDTV unit. WDTV is shipped with Video output resolution set to "Auto" and if you happen to change it to a resolution that you LCD TV doesn't support, you might end up seeing just a black screen. Ans since you can navigate to set it back, you have to do a reset of the unit. There is a small hole just beside the side USB input which you can use a small pin or object to reset the unit.

anyone have an issue where video plays fine but you don't get audio through hdmi? here's my setup...
WDTV - hdmi - tv
TV - optical audio cable - receiver
no audio. worked fine when i used regular a/v cables, but nothing with hdmi. help would be appreciated.
also was it ever fixed where you could connect multiple harddrives to each other to do more than 2? i wasn't able to get this working with 2 WD 500gb drives.

There's a trial release, but the improvements are quite limited.
Still no rmvb or bd iso support. A little bit disappointed......

Hi!
When I played .mka with dts audio file (sample 44,1kHz) on WDTV, my receiver (Technics SA-DX950) couldn't decoding as a dts signal, I heard nothing.
But I changed digital setting from AUTO to DTS FIX on my receiver it could decoding dts signal.
mka with dts audio file (sample 48kHz) was right in AUTO decoding mode.
If I played a dts audio CD on my DVD player, receiver could decoding dts signal in AUTO mod.
Is it a WD firmware bug?
thanks
