The WD TV sounds great to me except for the limitation of only 2 USB ports. I have accumulated recordings exported from Eye TV and similar devices. They are spread over several external HD's. I don't like the idea of having to swap HD's when I'm looking for a particular recording.
Is it possible to connect several external HD's to WD TV by using a USB hub?

Hi HoneyCrisp,
You are correct, we currently support 2 simultaneous USB connections. I've had a couple of requests to include USB hub support so I've included it on the feature request list.
One thing to point out... WD TV has a content aggregation system that scans the connected storage devices for all media types as well as the metadata so it can present a single view of all content across all storage devices. If you select "All Movies" from the main menu it will display "All movies" in a single view no matter what drive or where it is located on the drive. For 2 drives this process is very quick -- you can see where I am going with this. :)
Thank you for your interest!

Hi ScottWD!
First, it is totally great that you get down to the community! B-)
The Feedback about this product here and an hughe austrian forum is great - hope to get one in my hand soon!
I only have 2 questions, hope you can answer them!
* Is it possible to put out DTS/Dolby Digital sound from Matroshka files threw HDMI/SPDIF (either predecoded or PCM)?
* Can you give any hints when we can approx. hope for the next revision (hopefully with lan and webradio :)
Thank s in advance and greetings from Austria

Hi Scott,
Nice option to talk to someone from manufacturer, rare luxury :-)
Among many positives I’d like to draw you attention to some negatives:
1. First negative: Power button on remote does not actually turn power off (I guess it puts player in standby mode). My attached Passport ( no external power adapter) stays on when player is off. Media player gets very warm and it is unfortunate that it continues to run hot when not in use.
2. Second negative is about dvr-ms files. You cannot imagine how happy I was when I read user manual (yes, I RTFM :-) ) and found that dvr-ms is 100% supported! I have hundred of SD dvr-ms files (unprotected) recorded on my MCE 2005 and sure thing I wanted to try them.
I also have TiVo HD and I created HD dvr-ms file using VideoRedo (unprotected of course).
All my dvr-ms files have embedded subtitles, this is imperative for my family.
Well, SD dvr-ms files easily play back. However, no subtitles on display and no way to turn them on.
Then, attempt to fast forward or rewind freezes playback. Pressing play/pause halts playback and returns to folder view (I did not use media library option).
Now about HD dvr-ms. It starts nicely, then some audio hiccup occurs, playback continues; Then audio restores, another hiccup and so on. I suspect that these hiccups happen when player stumbles on subtitles but I'm not sure.
And my grief is missing subtitles in HD dvr-ms.
I tried another option to obtain subtitles from TiVo HD recording: Converted tivo to mpg and built srt file using free tools. This combination worked flawlessly, full transport control, thank you very much for this option.
My questions are: May I hope that dvr-ms playback will be fixed in future releases of firmware? May I hope to see embedded subtitles in dvr-ms files?
As to power off, can standby mode be made more economical so that inactive player did not run so hot? Could you also power off usb bus in standby mode?

how do you get thumbnail support if the files are videots folders? i have a preview.jpg set in the movie folder with the ts folders (like you would need for front row) but they do not show up.
also, with the the possibility of doing usb hub at some point, would this also include the possibility of leading one external drive through the back of another drive like you can do with the my books?
i have come across 2 issues. the rewind and ffwd function is really touchy. i will ffw a .vob file and when i hit play it resets the movie to the beginning. and then when watching a film i tend to see pauses in scene changes. maybe where the chapter change should be?

Hi Atomicman,
It's all about the community - Customer feedback helps me improve and develop our products!
It is possible to output DTS from WD TV via passthrough to your DTS enabled audio source. WD TV has a audio settings option to switch to digital. WD TV does have an optical SPDIF output.
I can't give you any hints but I can say we are very excited about our home entertainment product line. We are dedicated to this category and will continue to improve and enhance WD TV!

Thanks for your reply ScottWD!
Yes, the customer feedback is very important - i work myself for a worldwide leading company in the customer service department.
I already found a first hands-on: http://maddhat.com/?p=31 --> Sounds great, can't wait to have one in my hands!

I was wondering why this player does not support VC-1 codec considering many HD movies use this?
A good thing to add to this player would be an option to disable the OSD (on screen display), i hate pressing play to watch a movie and seeing the OSD on the bottom, i want to press play and only see the movie start nothing else.
The slideshow part is not bad but not perfect, on normal where it flips from one pic to the other its not fast enough, you can see the pic before it alittle bit just not smooth enough. I guess its kind of hard to explain but needs some tweaking.
One more thing is that this player can get very warm and im sure thats not good for the hardware inside.
What version is the HDMI on this player 1.3 maybe?
Other than that its not to bad, you say theres another player in the works and when might we see this on the market?
Will there be firmware updates and will we see them anytime soon?

ScottWD,
I have one big request for a feature/firmware update (or if there's already a way to do this, please let me know). I would love to have the ability to copy files from one USB device to another while plugged into the WD TV. The main reason is I plan on having a 3.5" My Book connected full time, and would like to use a 16gb USB Stick to transfer files from my PC (ground floor) to the WD TV + My Book in my theater (3rd floor) without having to unhook the My Book (including its power adapter) and tote it to/from the PC. I can understand this option not being present in the aggregated view, but it should definitely be available in the list view that identifies device and folder structure. Embedded subtitle support for MKV, and VOB files, as well as DVD Menus for DVD .iso files would also be great. The ability to add/edit cover art and metadata, atleast within the supplied software if not on the actual device, would also be great and make this device a great DVD Jukebox.
Thanks!

1. Ok device so far plays my mkv's and other files well, but is there no way to add cover art. I have tried adding art to folders, folder.jpg, filename.jpg, cover.jpg. Nothing have also treid .gif.bmp etc.
So if the downloaded file movie etc doesn't have metadata included then you are out of look for cover art etc. There must be a way, otherwise that stinks. I would much rather see my movies in the menus with cover art and folders not a long list of blank folders.
2. The other very annoying issue is having to magnify x2 then back to normal size to get the picture formatted correctly to the screen. Surely this must of come up in testing.
These are the 2 big downfalls right now for me.
