I apologize if my posts regarding dvr-ms (windows only) files are off-topic at MAC forum.
However, this post is about copy protected file and same crash my happen with any DRMed file,
not only dvr-ms.
I found that if user attempts to play copy protected dvr-ms file than player hangs. After pressing back button it returns to menu but stops recognizing ANY video file. Just displays message that file is not "playable."
Only full power recycling (unplugging) restores normal mode of operation.

I just hooked mine up last night and the unit is pretty nice especially considering the price.
However, I did notice that the blacks were being crushed.
ScottWD- are you guys aware of this and do you have any plans on correcting this in firmware?
I've seen my brothers HDX-1000, which I beleive is very similar to Popcorn, on my Pioneer 5070 and the blacks looked great. I'm also using a Toshida A2 to compare picture quality with which also shows excellent black detail.
If you guys can fix the black crush issue and create better searching this unit would be amazing!
Thanks,
Allen
I've been playing around with the resolution settings and it's no longer crushing black. Seems to like auto with on my Pioneer.

Just picked this up today and am liking what I see. A big thing for me on this device is the ability to set up a video playlist and watch the shows one after another.
I've tried creating video playlists with MediaPleayerClassic (and even WinAmp) as .pls, .m3u, and .asx. None of them are recognized by the unit. The playlist file will appear under the "music" folder, but will not play. The playlist does not even show up under "Video".
Is there something special needed to create a usable video playlist for this unit?
For future firmware updates, it would also be great to create playlists on the fly, rather than importing from a computer.
Thanks for the help!

Hey Scott thanks for replying to the community it is very much appreciated. As far the feature request list goes, will those potential features only be considered in the second version, or will there be firmware updates for early adopters? As far as features requests, would it be possible to add external dvd drive support and mkv subtitle support?
Other than those two small drawbacks this thing is perfect for what I want and need to do. Ive played everything from 1080p x.264 mkvs to 5 year old xvids.
For those of you who dont have a reciever capable of processing DTS do what I did. Download the Popcorn Hour MKV audio converter and use that to convert DTS to AC3. It will either replace the DTS track within the MKV with an AC3 version or you can choose to keep both within the mkv. The video stays untouched and it only takes about 5 minutes if you are running a dual processor. I know most this is a mac forum, but if youre running boot camp im sure you wont have a problem running this program.
As far as subs go for mkvs, I search opensubtitles.org and have been able to download .srt for video needing subs. I would suggest seperating movies into folders so that you can just drop the srt for a particular video into that folder.
Edit:
On second thought would it be possible to have an option to remove the fading in and out when sesrching through folders. Its a minor annoyance but it seems it could be easily fixed. Also, is anyone else having problems with turning on and off the machine? Sometimes I can turn it on and off, othertimes I have to power cycle the machine when I cant turn it on via the remote.

I have had that issue twice.
1. Any way to add cover art
2. Any way to fix screen format issues magnify then back to normal. I have seen this mentioned in the review with all the internal picutres. Anyone else have this issue.
3. The power cycle issue has happened twice in the couple days I had the unit.

Just received this device this morning and played with it for 45 minutes. My initial impressions are positive with several problems (in the order of significance):
1. I have HD videos from Canon HG10 HD Camcorder which WD TV does not recognize as valid video files. Those are raw backups/dumps from camcorder hard drive, not converted in any way (and I want to keep them that way). Canon manual says the video format is AVCHD: MPEG4 AVC/H.264. I hoped they would play - big setback for me because this is why I purchased this box for!
2. I have a bunch of children's movies backed up from DVDs. I found WD TV refuses to play a couple of them and in one case it played without a sound. Definitely room for improvement there.
3. When playing backed up DVDs, WD TV requires me to go inside each VIDEOTS folder and select a .VOB file manually. This is less than optimal. I wish I could just hit the play button when the title folder is selected. The software should be smart enough to figure out that there is a VIDEOTS folder inside and start with first/main VOB.
4. Also, WD TV does not offer full DVD experience (no title menu, etc) so you would still be better with Mac Mini playing through Mac OS X DVD player.
5. Forward skip button does not skip to the next chapter when playing a dvd - it brings you back to the beginning of the movie - quite annoying.
6. No Mac OS X software bundled - only Windows
I hope the firmware is upgradeable and fixes will be coming soon.
My rating: 3 out of 5 stars.

Scott -
Great to have a real WD guy here, thanks!
I bought the WD Media Player today with hopes of playing all my AVCHD material but it will not recognize any of it. I tried USB sticks, SDHC cards, card readers, connecting the cameras directly, I never got any of the AVCHD streams to play.
I even tried pulling the .MTS file out of the folders (PRIVATE/ACVHD/BDMV/STREAM/xxx.MTS) and putting it at the root level. No AVCHD material worked. I tried a bunch of AVCHD cameras and files including:
Panasonic SD-3
Panasonic SD-5
Sony CX-7
Sony SR-7
Panasonic SD-9
Should these all be viewable and playable? I should be able to keep them in their native files structure I would hope (?)
Thanks in advance.

My WD HD TV connected to receiver through digital optical cable and when i play .MKV files with DTS it's kind of choppy every 20-30 sec. When i play DVD iso with DTS it's fine and also mkv files with DD 5.1 also no problem.
Anybody else have the same problem?
thanks
