Can someone please confirm how the WD TV reads the thumbnails or cover arts for AVI (xvid/divx) video files?

The manual isn't clear about this.

Is it a matter of placing a similarly named JPG file in the same folder as the AVI. For example, movie.jpg for movie.avi.

PS just ordered one here in Australia

6. Although I read on http://maddhat.com/?p=31 that DTS pass through, I did a short test this morning.
I took an .iso containing the following audio tracks:
Dolby Pro Logic 2ch
Dolby Digital 5.1 channel
DTS 5.1

Test result using TViX6500 and Denon AVR1604 (Optical connection):
- when selecting Dolby Pro Logic 2ch on DVD DISC menu, Denon displays Dolby Pro Logic 2ch, sound is played in front speakers
- when selecting Dolby Digital 5.1 on DVD DISC menu, Denon displays Dolby Digital 5.1, sound is played in all speakers
- when selecting DTS 5.1 on DVD DISC menu, Denon displays DTS, sound is played in all speakers

Test result using WD TV and Denon AVR1604 (Optical connection):
- when selecting Dolby Pro Logic 2ch on DVD DISC menu, Denon displays Dolby Pro Logic 2ch, sound is played in front speakers
- when selecting Dolby Digital 5.1 on DVD DISC menu, Denon displays Dolby Pro Logic 2ch, sound is played only in front speakers
- when selecting DTS 5.1 on DVD DISC menu, Denon displays nothing, all speakers are mute!!!

I'll get back with further tests.

Regards,
Nic

I just bought the WDTV and could not be happier. I love the price and the ability to use my own drives. I'm a packrat and have movies and videos on different portable and desktop hard drives. With this unit i can plug in two drives into the unit and play them on any TV. While I am sure WD would like you to use their drives, I have had no problem with any USB drive. I know of no non computer tethered player that will play all formats. I have had only a few files that would not play but this is off a 250 gb drive. I have found only one wish format and that is to play the DVDs I have on my drive in the .iso format. I recommend that you organize your hard drive folders to make it easier to navigate large drives. I set it up for Children, Familyl, Action, Drama, etc moves. Playilsts would be nice. But in the meantime I have found the player for me and couldn't be happier.

Big shout out to Scott WD thanks for all the information you've shared and hope these posts have been helpful

You're right; I didn't phrase my observation correctly. The problem I have is that with some files, recently with some of my iso's, I get the error message about not recognizing that file format. I'm sure that the majority of the problems are with my files but I'm not quite sure. Again I tthink that these are minor problems that will eventually be worked out. But finally I see a reasonalbly priced solution to my problem.

It does play .iso

It doesn't support the DVD menus. It it jumping directly to the movie.

I didn't tried to play the extra features... from a DVD .iso image. Have anyone tried?

Nic

the WD TV would be great for video exhibitions if it can be set to loop a video continuously. Is looping possible?
also would a USB fast flash drive play 1080p h264 smoothly?

I've been testing out my WD TV and have found that it plays 720p content very well, but cannot play any 1080p content that I have tried.. The video becomes more and more pixelated, refreshing every 3 or 4 seconds. It is completely unwatchable. The same files play perfectly on my PC.

What 1080p content does work on the WD TV?

The videos I tested have the following attributes(using MediaInfo) and are MKV files:

Video 1:

Format : AVC
Format/Info : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile : High@L4.1
Format settings, CABAC : Yes
Format settings, ReFrames : 5 frames

Great software!

Many information. Useful.

For ScottWD: when is going to be released the next firmware? What fixes will it be included?

Thank you.

Best Regards,

Nic

I only hope that the next firmware can add the function to adjust subtitle position. :|
