Hack all you want, but let's not make Apple out to be the bad guy in this particular case. (Or in iPhone firmware updates, or that kind of thing.) They do plenty of things wrong. Let's not pretend this is a bad thing.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball really hit the nail on the head when he blogged about this a year ago..

Seriously folks. This is simple. If you do unsupported things, expect those things to be unsupported. It really doesn't matter how popular those unsupported things are. They're still unsupported.

You miss the point. The issue is not that Apple fails to support unsupported hacks, it's that they deliberately turn them off.

So what? What's your point? Their business model is to sell you a device and then sell you content. Why would they sit back and let users hack the device so it enables free content that puts Apple out of the loop? That's insane. Share songs with your friends? Apple wants to sell your friends songs. Get free TV shows? Apple wants to sell you TV shows.

The only reason why I would spend money on an Apple TV is if I had a lot of Fairplay content. What's the point of buying one only to hack it so it doesn't play Fairplay content, but media formats that every other media extender can play?

Unsupported means there is no support for the feature. None. Period. That includes continued functionality for the hack.

Why people expect anyone to support unsupported things is beyond me. It doesn't matter if Apple deliberately blocked a hack or inadvertently disabled it. Apple is under no obligation to ensure that unsupported hacks continue to work. None. Period. It doesn't matter how popular the hack is.

Again, Daring Fireball had this right last year. Gruber's post was regarding the iPhone 1.1.1 update, but the logic works for any software hack.

I agree with you garyi! So far, every "new feature" should have been available initially. If it weren't for Boxee, I wouldn't even use it. My PS3 & Xbox 360 perform much better as a media device for my TV.
