This is going to be a watershed camera I suspect. No longer does Canon have anything that is unique. Nikon now has the most number of full frame bodies.
And from what Nikon's been doing recently, I suspect they have more to come soon. A D800 should really nail a system with no peer.
As much as I would love to have this camera, and the price is high but competitive with Canon's 1Ds Mark III, the D3 is more to my interest. HIgher ISO performance is in line with my shooting style. I'm so glad this camera is out and has driven down the price of the D3 to be a reasonable alternative to the D700.
Bottom line, this is going to be a killer camera, that though expensive, is worth every penny for those who need what it can do.

This is a professional camera, why would you want HD video? That's candy a pro doesn't need.

That's not necessarily so. News shooters are having to carry around separate digital video cameras to shoot video for the Web as well as still stories for print and the Web.
A DSLR that shoots video gives you the flexibility of interchangeable lenses and the familiarity of a DSLR body. Plus, it's one less hefty gadget to carry around.

This is the camera I have been waiting for from Nikon, now I just have to wait for that $8000 to enter my bank account!

This looks like an impressive showing from Nikon. They were late to the party with full frame sensors, but since then, they've been encroaching and now possibly surpassing Canon's efforts. Competition is a very good thing. I look forward to reading in depth reviews.

That's right. HD Video is rather new to serious DSLRs, and all manufacturers put such new features on their low and mid-range cameras first to work out the bugs before adding such features to their pro-level cameras. Nikon was first with the D90, Canon followed soon with the 5D Mark II, and now we wait to see how it pans out before this kind of thing hits the top-level pro cameras.

It has always been this way. It's not about to change any time soon.

First, a disclaimer: Although no longer shooting professionally, I've been a Nikon partisan almost my entire life and have a decent investment in Nikon glass, so I can certainly understand your pain ...
and I think some of you are hallucinating.
For a variety of reasons, While I haven't done it yet, I've recently decided to finally unload my old Nikon gear and go completely Canon. My stepson, who also has a load of Nikon and Hasselblad gear, made the switch some time ago, when he was doing newspaper work.
Here's an interesting perspective on the impact of the newest Canon, announced just prior to the D3X, from another photojournalist:
http://www.journerdi...h-audio-inputs/
...and an answer for those who still don't understand why SLR video is a world-changer for pros:
http://www.vincentlaforet.com/
Nikon's been playing catch-up since they finally woke up to digital, a LOOOOOONG time after Canon, and they're still far from caught-up. Having a big (for me) investment in Nikon glass, I can certainly understand why you'd desperately want to believe Nikon has finally caught up with Canon in digital...
but you need to put down the crack pipe.
While the D3X more appropriately competes with the 1Ds, look at the specs and capability of the most recent Canon offering, the 5D mark II, and then look at the comparative price. Nikon surpass Canon in digital? You must be joking...

The Canon 1Ds Mark III has an ISO range of 50-3200... It also offers you the ability to record to BOTH SD and CF cards (UDMA/Class 4 or higher supported/recommended, I use Class 6 media)...
Personally, I hope that Canon doesn't put video into their 1D/1Ds line of bodies.
As for the 'higher' resolution of the new Nikon... Once you pass ~10MP, it's really irrelevant... How large do you need to blow the image up? I can have images captured on my 1Ds printed out at over 30x40 with the image being of high quality. I'll never print that large where I am (I have a service offer those sizes if people want them). 13x19/13x44 is more than enough print size for me (Epson R1900)...
BTW, stsk, congrats on making the switch to Canon... I made my switch from prosumer to professional grade equipment (also all Canon) at the start of this year... Absolutely zero regrets doing so... Well, other than how much I've spent in the process (about $26k-$28k in equipment now)...

Sounds like a nice camera! Very much like the Sony DSLR-A900, but costs almost 3 times more, without built-in image stabilization, and a smaller ISO range. Still, nice for Nikonians with cash to spare :-)
Hey, just being a little sarcastic. It is a very nice camera.

No problem. Once Obama is in office you will have plenty of money from his tax cuts to buy a D3X. That is, if he doesn't decide to buy everyone one as part of his redistributing the wealth.

Before you go out and sell all of your Canon gear to reinvest in a Nikon system you might want to wait a few weeks.
The rumor mill was accurate this time in predicting Nikon would introduce a D3Xd or D4. Nikon even beat the December 10th prediction.
"They" are also saying Canon is soon to release a new flagship MK4. And as good as Canon is at staying at the head of the pack, I'm sure they're cooking up something that will equal or surpass the D3X like equal or greater MP count, possible HD video, popcorn maker, etc.
I switched to Canon years ago after being an F3, F5, D1X user when I realized Canon was at the bleeding edge.
Nikon doesn't even have a serious pro fast wide angle anymore! What were they thinking when they discontinued the 28mm 1.4???
I'm excited about the new Nikon and would love to own one, but with a sizable investment in Canon glass and a track record of catering to the pro, I'm convinced it a matter of weeks before we find they've taken the wind out of Nikon's sails (or should I say: sales...ba-dah-boom!)

That's just nutty. I wonder if you might be the one who is hallucinating. What is the huge benefit that Canon offers that justifies unloading all your Nikon glass?

Both systems take very good pictures. The main differences are in the ergonomics of the cameras, and which type of speciality lenses the companies offer. Specs are always changing. And it's not minute differences in specs that take good photographs.

I guess some people just love to burn their money, and throw away their investments chasing an illusion... that would explain the current state of the economy.
