hmm i think iTunes does the same thing with music.

i recorded myself singing and of couse it all came out horribly... i imported it to iTunes anyway... at some point my mom got a new mac and i decided to share my music with her. before transfering my music library to her computer, i deleted all of the songs recorded by me on garage band...

i transfered the library and a few weeks later my sister was making fun of me because of some songs she found on my mom's computer. yeah... they were the songs i had recorded. so once i transnfered the library, all of the deleted songs were put back into it... any tips on how to get rid of those FOREVER??? >:(

iTunes will duplicate a song when it is added to iTunes if the song is stored on your computer somewhere other than your iTunes music folder and the option to "copy files to iTunes Library folder when adding to library is checked". This is an easy way to keep all of your music organized and in one place, but it can also lead to duplicates as in your case. There are two ways to aviod duplicates: 1) uncheck the option to copy files to iTunes Library folder when adding, or 2) leave the option checked and delete the original after you have added the file to you library.

Right on! Finally found somweone who could undeerstand where i was coming from [Windows]. i like the file hiegherarchy that i created in Windows, and would like to continue to use it. Not everything in Windows is bad, nor everything on the Mac is perfect, or at least preferable. if Picassa became available for the Mac, i would cetainly use it. i guess its hard to break old habits; like wearing that comfortable old shirt often feels better than a nifty, shiney new one!

Oh -- you mean it works exactly like TRASH has on a MAC since forever?! Wow. I'm shocked. If one has worked on a Mac for very long, I'd be a bit embarrassed right now if you didn't know to actually empty the trash can to REALLY delete your photos. That goes for people from PC backgrounds. The TRASH BIN has always worked the same way there, too.
It doesn't matter if you hit DELETE in iPhoto or hit -DELETE on the desktop with a selected file, it goes to the TRASH. We all know this (or should). I think the trash can in iPhoto is very obvious. It's under the RECENT menu and right above you ALBUMS menu. You can't miss it.
In fact, I would imagine most people select the shots they hate and drag them directly to the trash instead of hitting the delete key. Old habits die hard.
Just imagine if DELETE really meant delete but only in this program, removing precious photos from the homes of millions forever! The Mac community would've been climbing the walls years ago. "I hit delete but I just meant for it to go into the TRASH!"
----
I suppose there's a story here as it seems you've helped a number of newbies reclaim a GB or two, but I'll be honest --> I'm surprised this was still a mystery.
