Apple seeks backers of Psystar in amended complaint

Being a loan-ridden student who does not hold stocks in Apple, I want Psystar to win.
Why, you may ask? Right now there is only one company in Mac business, that is Apple. If Psystar wins, there will be "competition" in Macs business, both hardware and software, and it will do a lot of good for the computing industry. I expect a lot of innovative development in Macs by both Apple and non-Apple companies if Psystar wins this case. Prices of macs will go down, and Apple will also be forced to do more innovative things than making the buttons and dock shinier.

If you want something cheap then buy a Windows box. It's that simple. And contrary to your implications Apple is not a monopoly in its own market. That tired argument has already been rejected by the judge in this case. It would be like saying some outfit could slap together some car parts and call it a Chevy in order to "compete" with GM in the GM market.

And while we're at it here I have suspected from the beginning that somebody else was behind Psystar. This outfit appeared out of nowhere, literally overnight. Apparently Apple has some info that this is indeed the case. Wouldn't it be sweet revenge if it turns out Ballmer or Dell is behind this. They couldn't be that stupid could they?

Anil_robo, I couldn't disagree more with your assessment. I feel if Psystar wins that will mean the quality of the Mac product that we've come to expect will go down and thus will end up hurting the Apple brand.
To illustrate my point take a look at this:
http://www.youtube.c...h?v=IWpFZnERjjg
The box is filled with garbage, the inside of the tower itself looks cluttered and the way the package it is nowhere near the environmentally friendly packaging that Apple does.
I will gladly pay more for the better quality that Apple gives me.

I do understand you and unlike what another comment here states; it is not as simple as to buy a cheap Windows box. Even a poor student knows to appreciate the quality of Mac OS X. An argument against would be that OS X would be riddled with lots of the same problems as Windows if it was to be installed on any hardware and that may be true. But I can still udnerstand why a poor student wish Psystar to win.
But I am not sure it would lead to so much more innovation. Furthermore, I do think that Apple will come to a point when success will force it to change its strategy somewhat. How, it is not easy to predict, but if the Mac business grows a lot more, the question is whether it can continue with a limited range of devices and models as of today. Although the vast majority of "Macheads" would shudder and deny the mere existence of such a possibility, a kind of licensing might be realistic at some point. Steve Jobs has done things "no one" believed possible before. It all depends on what is the best thing to do under the given circumstances.
But meanwhile, I would suggest that any poor student would start looking for a used Mac. One might find one almost just as cheap, if not just as cheap, as any cheap Windows box, but with a much better OS:D Legally installed.

Clock ticks to 11:30 pm
Man duct-taped to an office chair is wheeled around to face Jack Bauer. Jack holds a 45 to the man's head.
Jack - We know you work for Psystar, and we know you are not working alone. WHO'S YOUR ACCOMPLICE?!
Man (weeping) - I don't know what you're talking about. All we wanted is a Hackintosh.
Bauer takes out a laptop (Apple Logo present) and turns the screen towards the man.
Jack - High prices lawyers. Microsoft losing market share. You want to try again?
Bauer points the gun at a Psystar box and fires.
Man - NOOO! I'll talk, I'll talk.
Man breaks down and sobs.

Absolutely agree with the comments about looking for a used Mac. As a kid, I was a Mac addict and never had the benefit of my parents purchasing my computers, so as the rest of the world was rocketing by with brand new Power Mac 6100s and System 7.5, I was rocking a Mac Plus and System 6.08. Then a IIci, then a 7100, then a 7500, and finally I had saved enough to afford a brand new G4 tower and a year-old 12" G4 PowerBook. Those are serving me well today with each running 10.5. Hopefully in the not too distant future I'll be able to afford an Intel Mac (mainly so that I can run Snow Leopard), but for now, what I have is just fine.
You can get a dual-G4 867 MDD tower like mine on ebay for all of 250 bucks these days. I have 2.5 gigs of RAM, 1.5 TB of hard disk space, and two DVD burners, it's everything I need in a desktop Mac 99% of the time.
Also, relating to what XMattingly said, I share that curiosity! I can only imagine how connected Steve Jobs must be, I'd bet he knows all sorts of rumors / sordid details about Psystar's origins.

In the day of the clones, PowerComputing, for all their fancy talk, did not bring any innovation to the Mac market. They could get faster and cheaper machines out quicker than Apple, but that is the nature of being small and nimble. When they goofed up by not being able to fulfill the demand they created they were easily forgiven; Apple could never act that irresponsible and get away with it.
