I've had the same problem. I restart the system and it hangs at "configuring update". I left it for about 25 minutes, and finally cut the power (via the button in the back).
Current configuration:
Aluminum iMac (Late '07)
2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
4 Gigs RAM (preinstalled with computer)
Some ATI graphics card (obviously)
Updating from 10.5.5
Edit:
Haha, yeah. Great update. Too bad it doesn't work.
Apple releases Mac OS X 10.5.6

Brand new Early '08 Quad Core; just setting it up; few apps installed yet. I ran the update from Software Update and got a Desktop that randomly blinked, a sticky cursor, and finally the Beach Ball of Doom which I humored for five minutes before hard booting and running fsck from Single User at restart.
I'd just run Disk Utility booted from the Restore disk the day before; all good. I'm sorry but Leopard IS the OS 9 of OS X. It's been fussy and buggy on the G5 and now on the Mactel. Can't wait for Snow Leopard, or some attentiveness from Apple. I'm d/l-ing the Combo Update now. I assume the coursor trouble is a new problem with the latest USB Overdrive after Safe Mode booting to a working cursor but still ... heading to MacFixit now.

Good Day,
I am wondering if there are perhaps any answerers out there? I've trolled thru the apple support site & forums, but as I'm rather a novice when it comes to "issues" with my mac as it rarely gives any trouble at all], I don't seem to be able any other people that are experiencing the same error, nor how to fix the issue.
Since updating to 10.5.6 [http://from 10.5.5 — I can no longer share my internet connection with the other users on my LAN. Users that have previously been doing so, without any hassle. This applies only to the Windows XP users that are running on PC hardware. I can however, still share to the other mac users, running 10.5.5 or others using various versions of OSX] or even running Windows [http://via Vmware Fusion 2.0.
What have they done? [assuming that it is Apple that have caused this new problem, for the unfortunate PC users]
What has changed to stop the PC users from not being able to surf the net? [shared by means of [1] either via direct Ethernet cable connection , or [2] the Ethernet cable connection into a 5 port D-Link Gigabyte switch [DGS-1005D] — both of which routes were working previously!
Even more strange is that those same users that are not able to surf, are still able to collect & send mail via their mail apps {Outlook, etc}, from their PC's.
Your assistance in this regard would be most appreciated. If in deed I need to go back to 10.5.5, how do I do that ? — I am not running time machine. Perhaps this may have been a useful instance for it in this case, however I suspect not as my experience with Time Machine, to date, has indicated it is useful for going back and collecting missing/changed files, but not for recovering entire folders, especially those that contain critical operating system folders etc.
I thought that I could just download the 10.5.5 Combo Update [from the mac support pages] & and install that to reinstate the 10.5.5 status. Thanks apple for messing with my Chi & HELP please MACWORLD, if you can.
Kind Regards
