I was surprised to find Chopper for sale at 99 cents and have had a great time with it. It's even better than the OS X version in that each individual mission doesn't have a timer.
Also, Labyrinth (from the article) has a great free version, Labyrinth LE, for the iPhone/iPod Touch, that is very challenging and gives you a great perspective on the innovative way teh accelerometers are used for gameplay.

I'm surprised Rolando is missing from your list. Rolando is fast, creative, and doesn't get boring or repetitive. Rolando is definately in my top 10, possibly number 1.
We used the same eligibility period for our iPhone apps that we did for the Editors' Choice Awards, which is up to November 1, 2008. (That's driven by our magazine publication dates -- the Best of 2008 issue is arriving in subscribers' hands some time this week.) Unfortunately, Rolando didn't come out until December, so we couldn't give it an award this time around.
That said, many on the Macworld staff seem to enjoy Rolando, and we'll be publishing a review shortly.

Hmm, nice picks - but I suggest for next year you consider working out some categories. I see too many gaps here...
No big strategy games (SimCity, Warcraft Inc., Virtual Villagers)
No racing games at all (Snail Mail and Low Grav Racer would be my favorites, but there are many more, like Asphalt and Fastlane)
No turn-based strategy games (Orions, Samurai Puzzle Battle)
No "classic" phone games (Sudoku, Solitaire, Mahjong, Backgammon, Chess etc.)
No Tower Defense fames (Fieldrunners and 7Cities are both definitely worth a mention)
I would also like to see a category like "made for iPhone" - for original iPhone games that are not just ports, but have been designed exclusively. So far (for me) these are clear nominees: Field Runners (Tower Defense), Trism (Puzzle), Ivory Tiles (most beautiful tilt puzzle ever), Deep Green (only iPhone chess game with decent ergonomics and great beauty) and certainly Rolando. Seeing none of these mentioned is a bit irritating.

You definitely missed some. Off the top of my head:
Best utility: Google Earth (amazing that I can see the world from my phone)
Best icebreaker: iMartini (looks great at a bar, and spanks the pants off the hokey iBeer app)
Best music app: Pandora (I love my Pandora streams. Shazam might be a close runner-up).
Best time waster: Colors! (I am no artist but love making pretty paintings in this app).
SimCity probably came out too late, and it's a tad buggy now, but WOW on that!
Glad you got X-Plane though, that is a real accomplishment for a mobile platform.

I agree with dreyfus, you categories seem a little random. I also would like to add my favorite to the list: MetSquares.
