BeejiveIM gets my vote, although it's not free. Multi-protocol chat client with support for Push messaging (kinda).
You stay logged in on their servers, but get mailed if you get a message.

Pinger Phone is a new multi-communication app that does the Bejive notification for IM right to your phone and aggregates Facebook, Myspace and Twitter feeds. And it's FREE.

I paid for the premium twitterific, but I use Twitterfon now instead. Blazingly fast, thanks to Twitterfon's caching of images. With Twitterfon, all images come up instantly when you open it. Twitterific takes a horrible amount of time in comparison, even over wifi. I only use Twitterific when I want to post a hyperlink from Safari. If Twitterfon comes up with that feature, I'll be deleting Twitterific.

Speak of the devil - anyone else having Facebook login problems today? I haven't had problems for months; then all of a sudden today my Facebook app doesn't want to log me in. Multiple reboots, reinstalls from the mobile app store (home computer is at, well, home), nothin'.

OK, think i found it.
Clicked on settings, then at the bottom i've but twitter-switch to on.
Next pressed Edit-button at the top.
Then Clicked Twitter at the bottom.
There I could add my twitter name and password.
Clicked done.
And now my friends appear in het Home screen.
It's a bit of a hassle now, but it DOES work.

I haven't tried BeeJive. I'd like to but I'm not paying for it.
I've tried all but two of the free IM clients, I believe and AIM is the best. Obviously it's not the best if you have friends spread out across multiple chat protocols but if all your friends are on iChat, it's the best out there.
