Apple does not make laptops - they make notebooks.

That's a green hardshell case that's on the MacBook. I have one that's similar except black on my white MacBook.

I think the use of the word laptop is acceptable. It is used by just about everyone to represent portable computers that use a clamshell design. It only has a single meaning, whereas the word notebook has a dual meaning. As a member of the information technology community, I rarely hear any of my peers use the word notebook. There is no reason to be pedantic.

@azchen
I agree with you - the use of the word laptop is acceptable, and I never said it was not acceptable. I actually said 'Apple does not make laptops - they make notebooks'. If you search the Apple website, nowhere will you see a reference to a laptop computer for sale - only a notebook computer. There have been cases of people suing because they were sold a 'laptop' and burnt themselves. I also work in IT and can assure you that the word notebook is used extensively when referring to the portable computer made by Apple. I have no objection to your being pedantic.

guitar_Juan-
Check your dictionary on the work pedantic. I believe azchen was
referring to you, not himself. Just because Apple prefers to call them
notebooks on their website does not make anyone incorrect in calling
them laptops. The word notebooks has come in to play more recently as a
marketing idea as laptops have evolved. This kinda falls under the 'You
say "tomato"(toe-MAY-toe), I say "tomato" (toe-MAA-toe)' category. It
is still a computer that sits on TOP of your LAP. Whatever you choose to call it..."a
rose by any other name is still a rose"

Well, after taking this topic way off track in the first place. I think I should note that the chill mat looks cool and I'm gonna get me one. Also a red shell for my MBP that sits in my lap most of the time and is mostly referred to as "my computer" 'cause it's the only computer-like thing I own - but, maybe I'll start calling it "Fred" just to avoid any un-correctness on my part re proper nomenclature.

albertw: Speck makes hard shells. I've had one on my first generation MBP for a couple of years now and no complaints. Put one on my wife's MB, too.
