I'm quite partial to X-Galaxy by Multithemes - it's kinda like Starfield Simulation for the 21st century.

I still wish I had the old screen saver that had Spock melding with the Horta and shouting, "Pain!"
And I miss the original Flying Toasters screen saver, but not for the toaster, but for that game you could play similar to Asteroid. Wasted a lot of time waiting for film to process at work flying around blasting things.

A few comments: a.) this survey doesn't consider s. s. behavior on multiple monitor setups. Some (such as Red Baron) work with only single monitors. Others display the same stuff on each one. The very best (like Surveillance Saver) display different stuff on different monitors. b.) No s. s. survey ought to forget SETI At Home. Even if you aren't impressed by the SETI Project, the idea of donating your free processor time to scientific research is cool, and the idea of a research project amassing a huge amount of computing power on the cheap is much cooler. I wish that other projects would imitate SETI. c.) the Plasma Tunnel it too gastrointestrinal for my taste, I really miss the old After Dark tunnel module. Is there a modern version availble? There ought to be.

the developer who makes "3D Desktop Aquarium", Rob of Useless Creations (http://www.uselesscreations.com), has a variety of fun 3D screensavers for Mac and Windows. his "Space Wars 3D" is fantastic, and i refer to it as the "conversation killer" as that's usually what happens when the screen saver kicks in.
don't care for marine fish? the makers of Marine Aquarium also have Goldfish Aquarium. the movement of the goldfish's tails is nothing short of mesmerizing.
since most Quartz Composer creations can be used as screen savers, check out Futurismo Zugakousaku's work at http://www.zugakousaku.com (English link at top right of the page). most of the works can be found under "Quartz Composer Lab" link. Quartz Compositions (http://www.quartzcompositions.com) also has a few good ones.

Is there a way to specify "random screen saver" in the configuration, but not have it use the built-in screensavers? Some of the abstract ones are OK, such as Flurry, Shell or Spectrum, but others, like the RSS feed, the photos, or the iTunes Artwork aren't really appropriate for work.
