I was just making a comparison to what other people say. So many of the posters have said that because the program did not work for me it must be no good for anyone.
My son is a photographer like you & has had problems with a flash card or two & they would not back up & he has had one or 2 that wasn't corrected with the recovery programs he tried. Next time I'll let him try my copy of Data Resue II. With that FW800 drive as an exception I generally have ample backups.
It is could to hear what different repair utility programs people use & which ones & in which cases they have been both successful & non-successful.
I'm just tired of seeing so many say that my way is the only way. If you do it different you must be wrong. I thought the saying was, "Be different use a Mac." That to me means you do what works for you with your Mac & I do what works for me. Information still needs to be passed as with more types of programs used programs that worked before may not work now. And this is a way to find out about other choices. But the statement stays as choices.

On that I agree, there have been pleanty of examples of that in this thread already :p
Software can't always do it's stuff if there is a fundamental hardware problem. If you still have your old FW drive, I can recommend OnTrack and Drive Savers - two companies where you send your broken device in and they pull the data off. It's more pricey then software, but if the data is valuable it can be worth it to get it back... they will also give you estimates for recovery so you can decide just what and how much you want back.

"For a discussion of a topic that has more to do with opinion than fact, you are doing your best to try to be the only one that is right. In most everyone else's opinion you are baxically wrong. It must be nice to have the correct opinion "
Not trying to be right, just stating my opinion. Although, I generally do believe that my opinion is correct as most people do. I can't imagine someone who has an opinion that they believe to be incorrect. Boy, that would be some deep psychological hoodoo for sure.

Thanks for that suggestion. If something like that happens again, I'll try that route if like you say there is enough non-backedup data on the drive. It seems like it was the 10.2 or 10.3 upgrade that caused the problem. I waited until Apple & the FW800 hardware company had new drivers before I had any FW800 drive running during boot. But I like to boot from a FW drive whenever there is a new system just to be sure it won't do any damage before it gets put into general use.
I had extreme difficulty trying to get OS 10.5 to work on my Sep 06 Intel Mac Pro. BUt like you said if you have a hardware problem, no software will be able to help it. It turns out that the ATI X1900 video card that I was trying to get Apple to replace for 9 months was keeping the system from booting into OS 10.5. After that OS 10.5 works as good as can be expected. Now I have to run OS 10.5 as I have 2 ATI 3870 video cards in it with a minimum system requirement of of OS 10.5.2. I guess no more 10.4 unless I only use any displays connected to the Nividia 7300 GT videl card.
Backups do work better than any utility or repair service. But I still wouldn't be without both.

Its ust that in most of these discussions there is more than one right & probably just as likely more than one wrong. That just means that for you to be right someone else doesn't need to be wrong. What works for you may not work for me or my ways of doing things may not work for you. Or it may just be a matter of opinion.
With Apple being the original developer of FW & with Steve Jobs the used car saleman spending much time explaining to us why FW was great & USB1 or USB2 was worth the semiconnectors used to make it. USB should only be used for slow input devices like keyboards & mice. Then to have father Steve now tell us that FW is useless & should be tossed. For this reason we have elimited it from the iPod, iSight camera, & now from the Intel MacBook. With Apple elomitnating FW in so many cases, how can the rest of us feel safe with iMacs in particular. Intel MacPros & Intel MacBook Pros can always have a PCI/e card to give us FW800 or better. Just like my 17" PowerBook has 2 eSATA ports in its PCI slot, more commonly called a PC card slot. Unlike the floppy that even Windows Users finally figured out as well as schools, that others forms of removable media were more reliable & held enough data that only one was needed in most cases. FW is still useful. I still try to be sure that all new drive cases have FW800. Most will have eSATA for sure & USB2 thrown in for good measure. I'm not sure that I've ever used the USB interface though. I can understand why people are so upset with Apple & Steve Jobs because of the widespread elimination of Apple developed FW from Apple products while at the same time FW400 ports were becoming standard on at least all of the Windows computers I have seen over the last few years.
People don't want to change for one thing & stop using their god reliable devices. Many do not know where to post complaints or comments, good or bad. Most want the Mac to be all that it can be. Without FW it is hard for it to do that.

Now why do people think that some users have taken the KoolAid?
You should have worked for the KGB. Their considered and humanitarian response to people who couldn't help but notice the communist system didn't work as described was that they were insane and institutionalise them, down to the medication and shock therapy.
I don't hate the glossy iMacs, although I had come to loath the model I made Apple take back. It is however far short of the ideal qualities that the previous white models had, with only speed and extra RAM capacity on its side. I know I must love "the look" because it is this year's fashion, but it is just that. This year's fashion. Next year it will go back to being acceptably pugly at best.
It is the Emperor's clothes, or more accurately a fat women in a corset, wearing handbags and shoes (mouse and remote) from her previous outfit. She drapes her arse in black so that "it won't look so big". She wears a gross unsubtle black logo like a huge bow on her frock to impress you with her designer label so you won't criticise her laughable piebald appearance.
Having experience in having to rescue the hard drive so that I could extract my work in an external case, servicing it is a pain. To get at anything other than the RAM, you have to remove the glass, the frame, the shiny screen (yes it too is glossy) underneath and then remove a good chunk of other stuff in the curved back just to get at the drive.
Why is the back curved and pinched at the sides, which doesn't help the air circulation or accessability? The fat woman tries to hide her weight by crossing over her feet, like models do, to look slimmer. Needless to say all this contortion makes her sweat and pant a lot in hot weather.
She is not totally without style. The slimline keyboard, her only accessory that matches, is a gem. It is without shadow of doubt the best keyboard I have ever used and has had PC users wanting to buy it for their PCs. Apple could make a few dollars there should it choose.

Yup. I should point out I'm not posting for Biallystock's benefit - his loathing for glossy goes beyond religious fervor - he's simply incapable of holding a rational discussion. I just believe in balance and I don't want someone on the fence to mistake his irrational ranting for a reasoned opinion. Not that there is a need to worry about that with his last three posts :)
