"Knob-like controls"? Uh-oh. Didn't Apple go down this road before? Knobs are meant to be operated with fingers, not a mouse. And I'm guessing keyboard control of those "knobs" is out of the question.

I imagine that your info fro this article is gotten from limited access to the app in an Apple booth or somesuch. I look forward to more detail, especially to know whether the raggedy integration between GC and the iTunes.app and QuickTime Player will get resolved. The announced QuickTime X should have an impact but we're not expecting to see that until 10.6 if even then. In particular, the Podcast function could be so much better executed than it is now.

>Although you could select different amplifier models in previous versions of GarageBand...
Simulation? Yes. Modeling? Hardly.
One question, can I route a MIDI guitar through the amp modeling and FX boxes? The tutorial just talks about a real guitar going through them.

On-screen knobs are good for new users, esp. users who are accustomed to the technology being "faked" on-screen. For newbies, on-screen knobs can be a helpful, friendly way to learn a new app.
On-screen knobs are terrible, even destructive, to users who work with a tool for long hours, or work with it very often. The extra clicking and dragging, and fine motor motions required of you, come with a cost, in sore joints, muscles and tendons later. On-screen knobs are not long-term relationship material.

Good thing I didn't say they were modeled.
I guess I misinterpreted what you meant when you wrote, "Although you could select different amplifier models in previous versions of GarageBand..."
To me, there are no "model" amps in GB'08, just "Amp Simulation". The amps in GB'09 are actual models of say a Marshall, Fender, Vox, and others.
...or perhaps I read to much into the word. That happens too.

What is your question?
Modeling and simulation mean the same thing in this context: the software simulates a certain kind of amplifier, for example, so that the sound output from the software seems to have been recorded using such an amplifier. Modelers are available, in various hardware as well as software, to simulate certain models of amp, guitar, microphone.... and more.

My comment didn't seem to come out in the right spot.
In the article, the author says "GarageBand ’09 also emphasizes the program’s ability to model guitar amplifiers and effects" but when somebody countered with "Simulation? Yes. Modeling? Hardly.", the author replied "Good thing I didn't say they were modeled."
But, to me, that first sentence " the program’s ability to model guitar amplifiers " is indeeded saying the amps are modeled....
sorry for the confusion...
