Re: "Would this serve as a direct competitor to MobileMe?"
-----
Yes, when all the v1.x features are completed (see the Roadmap), it'll replace the syncing capabilities of multiple products and services -- including much of MobileMe, BusySync, Spanning Sync, etc. ... and provide more flexibility than any one of them.

Be careful with Derman Software. I bought their FolderControl - relatively expensive software for a one trick pony, controlling Finder windows - and Derman software abandoned it at 10.4 (Derman Software lists 10.4 as compatible but the last version really works only with 10.3).
I wouldn't be surprised to see Derman Software abandon Sync'Em. When they do, all you'll hear is tough luck: don't upgrade your OS if you want to use our software.

Don't know what Alec's problem is, but my experience has been very different.
I used FolderControl from 2003 on 10.2 through around late 2006 on 10.4 and at least 2 of my office-mates were also using it on 10.4. Yes, they did retire FolderControl but all software products have a limited life-span. When I asked, they said that Apple's Finder changes had broken too many things and it wasn't worth updating.
I've also used other of their products (some of which they've now made free) and has always been quite happy both with their products and their support. My guess is that Alec has some axe to grind.
More importantly, I've started seriously using Sync'Em at about version 1.15 and, while there have been a few teething problems, I've found the support to be both speedy and knowledgeable. These people actually seem to care!
I now have Sync'Em successfully running on 4 different systems. The 2 desktop/laptop pairs are each syncing Exchange contacts, Gmail contacts and Address Book as well as Exchange and iCal calendar events for 2 different people. Works quite well, at this point. Can hardly wait for the rest of the features to be implemented.

And you are a new reader with zero previous posts. And intimate knowledge of Derman's product strategy.
Highly credible.
I am a genuine buyer of Derman Software and Folder Control, I've outlined my own experience. I wouldn't trust them with another cent.
Your mileage may vary.
