Hi

I'm hoping somebody might be able to help me, my setup is as follows:

Imac DV+ 450mhz, 640mb RAM
Ethernet DSL Connection with four port Hub
PC running Win XP
HP Deskjet 1220c
Intel Netport Express Pro Printserver

Basically, my PC can print via the print server with no problems at all. The Imac can see the print server as I can access it's config pages using web browser. I can ping with print server too. Also I can access files from the PC using my mac.

All I want to do is print to the printer from my imac using IP. I've spent ages trying adding an lpr ip printer, but all I get is pages of garbage out of the printer. I can print using usb from the mac.

I've also tried getting postscript pdd files for the printer and still cannot get it to work. I have all the relevant drivers for the deskjet as it works via usb.

Sorry for going on, I just want to let you know that I've tried everything that I can think of, so, if you've got any ideas, please let me know.

Alan

You cannot configure your Mac to communicate with this printer using "LPR and IP" - with rare exception, that set of protocols is only supported for use with Postscript-capable network printers. Your DeskJet 1220c is not a Postscript printer, and PPD files (used to set up Postscript printers) are of no relevance to it.

The MacOS printer drivers for this printer (both "classic" and for OS X) absolutely require network communication with the print server using the Appletalk network protocol. The Intel print server you are using does support Appletalk, but to use it with an inkjet printer may require manual configuration of the "Printer type" before the MacOS driver will correctly identify the connected printer as a DeskJet (and not a Laserwriter) printer.

You did not specify, but if you are using OS X I suggest you not consider any solution other than using an HP JetDirect print server.

I would be happy to use appletalk to print, and as you rightly said, the print server does support appletalk.

But for me to set appletalk up on the printserver I need an appletalk zone, which I can't seem to obtain from anywhere on my mac. Appletalk shows as up and running, but the zone section is greyed out. Other people have told me that I have to have a special router that gives appletalk zones, but I can't find any info on this.

Alan

<PS> I am using OS X

On a simple network, Appletalk zones are not required nor can they be produced (unless you also have an Appletalk router on your network). I would have thought you could simply leave that field blank without problems.

I suspect, however, that this has nothing to do with your problem getting this setup to work. The HP DeskJet version 1.3 driver for OS X is very picky about the print server it is used with, and to date I have not heard from anyone who succeeded in getting it to work with anything other than one of HP's own JetDirect print server devices.

You might want to put this all on hold until MacOS 10.2 arrives, and then upgrade. I suspect 10.2 will finally support IP printing to all printer types (and may even drop support for printing via Appletalk anyway).

Though, thankfully, Apple is increasing their support to printing through IP, they are not dropping Appletalk support just yet. Also this is a first stage for OS X, most printers will be supported, but all printers may not. Kind of a grey area unfortunately. We will see.

Hi there,
I'm facing the same problem as Alan: can't print to a HP 1220C from a Mac using a router/print server. More than 2 years have passed now since the last post. Any progress?

leonel,
It would have been better to start your own thread. The above is all out of date info.
Standalone print servers (ie, that plug into the back of the printer) usually support two or three protocols. Like maybe appletalk, IP/LPR and IPP, for example.
Your OS 9 HP printer driver only supports appletalk (I think - I don't have that printer). Have you tried appletalk (not localtalk - appletalk over ethernet)? In OS X, the HP driver also supports appletalk, but may also support IP/JetDirect. And if that doesn't work, you are sure to be supported by the open source drivers at http://www.linuxprinting.org/macosx/.
Does that help you get a picture of how much more versatile OS X is?

You could start over - i.e. not use the print server. Connect the printer to the mac and then print through the mac's print queue to the printer ... That's the way I've set it up ....
