And iMovie HD still works perfectly fine on all current Macs. Alas, they stopped offering it when iMovie '09 shipped.

I tried to load Apple's special HD offering with my iLife '09 and it wouldn't install. It only installs with iLife'08. How do you get it on the computer with '09? Yes, I kept a download of HD.

I restored iMovie HD from my TimeMachine backup. The restore was VERY easy. It makes restoring file at work a bad joke of the many steps we have to go through at work.

I took precautionary measures and moved my iMovieHD to my desktop before downloading the new iMovie09. So I can acutally run both. Its pretty sweet.

Seems to me my Mac Intels with Parallels s/w running PC video edit kit will be the go as I am using Canon HF-10 AVCHD and love it. However, before I leap that way,as I also use FCP (5.0) I note that (6.1.0 unsure of actual vers) will run ADVHD but hope it does not have to convert it to AIC or whatever. Consumer pressures will advance the cause of ADCHD. The best format will not always win as in the case of Sony's BEta format.VHS won.

Welcome to our humble little village, fellow peasant!

The only way to get a discount on iLife is to buy a new Mac, in which case it's free. Or, if you bought a new Mac after it was released that did not already have iLife '09 installed, it costs $10 to upgrade. Otherwise it's $79 for the suite, the same price everybody pays (even though Apple says "Upgrade for $79," which really means "Buy a new copy for $79.")

Well I have spent considerable time with iMovie over the last week. Creating and editing several movies and I must say I really like it. While I may have more control in some respects with iMovieHD (like sound editing), the speed and ease with which I can create really good movies with iMovie09 is amazing. Add to that the number of additional features (e.g., precision editing) and the new themes and you have a fantastic editing program.
I really can't see myself going back to iMovieHD - most everything I need and want is in iMovie09 and it is much faster and easier to use.
I will be using iMovie09 much more than I ever did iMovieHD because it is a lot more enjoyable to use and I get a great end product so much faster and easier.
That's my 2 cents.

"The way iMovie '09 handles video internally is mostly unchanged from
the previous version: interlaced DV and HDV footage use single-field
processing to improve performance, which means iMovie is throwing
out every other horizontal line of information.

Apple has deliberately made a trade-off between performance and image
quality for some footage."

The key phrase here is "handles video internally". Is it the case that
the performance/quality trade-off that the review talks about is
relevant only during editing- the image that we view within iMovie as
we work. Does the external product/result retain the same quality
video that the input had (unless compression is chosen on export)?

I can't find any authority or reference that explains clearly what is going on, in this regard. Can you clarify; my potential conversion to imovie09 depends upon it!!

Thank you,

Hi. When I export my home "movie" (made up of photo stills and some video clips, and music) to iDVD, and then play that DVD on a regular DVD player, some of still photo images "collapse" and lose a lot of quality. I need to present this project to a group of people. If I were to use a projector and connect that to my MacBook Pro, what format of Quicktime should I export the movie to for the best quality? Is it uncompressed quicktimes? Thank you!

This comment is written with about as much clarity as a Windows alert, must be a former Windows person!
