App Store tally: 20,000 apps in seven months

That's like asking how many applications one can install on their Mac, at how many LA restaurants can one dine, and how many friends do you need in a world of 6.6 billion?
App growth rate indicates the health of the iPhone developer community, its social impact and cultural relevance, the breadth and competition available in what's available, the success of iPhone business model, and not least of all, Apple's prowess in Silicon Valley and respect in Wall Street.
And the question that pops into your head is how many apps fit on an iPhone?

Out of the 5000 which were added last month, I wonder how many were single function, severely limited 'search' Apps. I see one company has around 264 of these Google data grabbers. At the moment the more comprehensive, quality Apps are being drowned out by these types of App.

20,000 apps? Sounds great. Where is a simple app that can shoot video clips? (something my old FREE Motorola phone did from the start). Last I checked, you need to jailbreak your phone to get this to work.
Or where is the app that allows you to use the iPhone as a 3G modem so you can connect your laptop to the net? It may violate the AT&T agreement, so Apple killed it,, but it doesn't violate agreements in Canada. I have a 6GB/month data plan, and that would be very useful.
So 20,000 is meaningless when 2 obvious no-brainer apps are conspicuously missing (correct me if I'm wrong). What's with that Apple?

Uh, the no-brainer might be using another phone if these "two missing" apps are so important to you. Since they aren't to me, and neither is the phone, I have an iPod Touch. Though I could complain that it doesn't have a "Beam up Scotty" app to beam me to Pluto.

well, items like Video just aren't palusable as of yet... yes, moto had some rudimentry video apps, but you must keep in mind Apple needs to have quality apps that do those sorts of things, they can't just "skimp" and say they have that feature... it's simply not who they are.
yes, when 256GB iphones are available in 2, 3 years or even 128GB it would make sense... but currently 8GB is the entry point and nobody wants some kid or grandma that says 'this damn phone doesn't work"... not knowing they just recored 38 minutes of video! so you need to understand the concept of a "quality device", not a cheap featured device.
as for tethering, that's been rumored for awhile, but the massive popularity of the iPhone has stretched the 3G network, so it's not important right now... again... you need to learn that those types of features can wait... they are not critical and will happen "in time". NO apple didn't kill it, it's just not feasible, learn the difference.
so learn this simple zen phrase.... "Focus is all about saying NO".... it's something... someone told Steve in the early days of Apple... and when you deeply think about it... it's completely correct. When your eyes FOCUS, they eliminate all that is unneeded. Apple products are designed the same way. It's very zen... look it up... so yes, all of your dreams are valid, they just aren't in focus since they aren't feasible with today's technology or infrastructure.

"Uh, the no-brainer" to me means that a $450 16 GB iPhone should at least be able to shoot video as well as my previous free moto phone or my $79 point-and-shoot digital camera with its 2GB card.
And no, I'm not asking for teleportation, just features that cheaper and simpler devices have been doing for over 5 years.

no, no, no... it doesn't work that way... do you even own a Mac? or did you come from the Windows world?
in the high quaity Apple world, everything needs to work at acceptable levels... you can't really have one similar model that has features that others lack... so it's not about 16GB, it's more that all units having 128GB-256GB THEN you can starting adding memory hungry apps like Video.
yes, your previous moto had very low rez video, but again...... that's not what Apple is about... they know it is best to WAIT until you can have high quality video, then you aren't stuck with all those poor 120x240 clips.
so you are basically wanting Apple to lower themselves to your level, which isn't going to happen. if you don't like the iphone for this reason, go away for 2, 3 years... but for now, Apple is doing the right thing for the customer.
