The camera you're referring to was the S1 IS. The new versions added the 'X' to the name.
Meanwhile, I'm perplexed by a different aspect of this "story": the SX1 appeared months ago, at the same time that the SX10 appeared. I specifically remember reading about it on the Canon USA site, and I could have sworn that I also read about it here. In any case, this is non-news to Canon S- line buffs.
Even still, the article fails to mention on crucial bit about the SX1: it's the first PowerShot camera to be equipped with a CMOS sensor, which normally only shows up in their SLRs.

You are correct - the SX1 IS isn't a new model. It's just new to North America. It was announced with the SX10 IS in September 2008, but only the SX10 IS made it over.
DPReview: Canon SX1 IS and SX10 IS
Another noteworthy addition to the SX1 IS is the ability to shoot in RAW format. I'm glad to see this finally make it over - I've been pondering an SX10 IS, since it was the only option. Now we have to see the comparison with the Nikon P90?

The thing I love about the SX1 is it's articulating LCD which is now virtually non-existent in cameras ... albeit virtually universal in camcorders.
I don't get it. These articulating screens are soooo useful in overhead shots, low-to-the-ground shots and self portraits. Plus enable protection of the screen's surface when folded inward. And they add very little extra weight and width to the overall camera.
No articulating screen is the only reason I have not bought a digital SLR. Am I the only one?

No argument from me, I'm a huge fan of the arm. But you should be aware, if you're not already, that Olympus and Sony both make DSLRs with articulated arms. I think they will eventually be more prevalent, but the pro community, much of which scoffs at shooting via the LCD at all (you are, after all, sidestepping the primary benefit of using an SLR by doing so - only the viewfinder can give you a real-life preview of what the camera is seeing), has been slow to warm up to them.

While you are waiting for the SX1, you might want to look into CHDK. This is software you place on your camera card that adds a form of Raw support to the S3 and S5 (and a number of other Canon cameras as well). You can check out their wiki at:

@HerbalEd
Check out the Olympus E-30 (reviewed by Macworld today: http://www.macworld....30.html?t=216). Looks like it has an articulating screen. :-)
