Still the same crappy multiple stage install process Adobe is famous for.
And it still includes and installs, WITHOUT ASKING OR NOTIFYING THE USER IT WAS INSTALLED, Adobe AIR (which Adobe Reader doesn't even use).

Adobe following Apple in this regard to install other software? It's odd that it's not happened on either my Mac OS X machine or my Windows machine. I have yet to see any hint of Adobe AIR, not even a suggestion to install it.

Are you sure it didn't install Adobe AIR on either Mac OS X or Windows? I haven't installed Reader on Windows, but I would NOT be surprised if they also threw it in there, but both v9.0 and v9.1 installed AIR on Mac OS X for me (and I just downloaded what appeared to be only the Reader download) without any warning (this is what I meant when I wrote "WITHOUT ASKING OR NOTIFYING", it doesn't tell you it's doing this).
From what I can tell, Adobe Reader itself installs AIR when you run Reader for the first time, and it asks for administrator privileges.
You only can tell AIR was installed by looking inside /Applications/Utilities/. You should find two new applications in there, named something like (as I have uninstalled it already, and don't desire to reinstall it) Adobe AIR App Installer and Adobe AIR Uninstaller.

Yes-that is exactly what happened-I uninstalled AIR using the uninstaller. cb

Visit your Utilities folder and you will find Adobe Air installed without your permission or knowledge.

Interesting that the Acrobat program does not offer the update. Says no updates are available. So you go over to Adobe.com, as referenced in the article. Here is the only mention of Air:
Adobe Reader 9.1
(includes Acrobat.com on Adobe AIR)
Mac OS PowerPC 10.4.11 - 10.5.5
English
Of course the installer does not give you the option to deny the installation of Air. Must be manually uninstalled.
