Apple is already selling two other sets of headphones that work with these; the Apple Earphones with Remote and Mic and Apple In-Ear Headphones with Remote and Mic.
What I want is an alternative version without the clip, and the option of buy-to-order with different headphones.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was talking about when I said "no direct link from the main page." They are no longer even visible on the Apple Store front page; the only way you can get to them is by going through the link to the new ones.

Click on the new Shuffle, and you'll see a link to the second generation Shuffle right there next to the words "Still Available."

I would say, seeing as how you can't even see the link on the front page of the Apple Store, that you are not really in the targeted demographic for the shuffle. The link has got to be 4 or five times the size of the shuffle and you still can't see it...

It's on the main page as well, just below the fold. Scroll down just a bit. Of course Apple is going to highlight the new product more prominently, but the older shuffle is just as available today as it was yesterday for those that detest the new design.

VoiceOver now means that the Shuffle is accessible to the visually-impaired community, as well as to folks who might want something simpler; you could load music on this for a senior citizen in the hospital or a nursing home, and there'd be no complicated clickwheel or anything to figure out.
I do hope that someone comes out with an adapter (like the Shure adapter I use with my iPhone that provides an on-cord mic), because the Apple earbuds don't work for me at all (they either fall out way too easy or they irritate the inside of my ear). Belkin or Griffin should get on the ball with this.

Apple has already announced an adaptor for third party earphones*. I really don't get all the fuss. Besides, when I think about how I use a shuffle, clipped inside my coat, or on my backpack when biking, etc. the controls on the cord are far, far more convenient than the controls on the device. I guess both places would be ideal, but given a choice of one or the other, I'll take them on the cord.
*Correction. Apple said they are working with third parties to develop adaptors and earphones. Apple themselves are not releasing an adaptor.

To help keep track of the earbuds, Apple announced iPrick a ear piercing attachment that will thread the earbud wire through any pierced ear hole. It has a clip that holds the wire attached to the earbuds preventing them from being lost in the "shuffle" as users move through their day.
I find that they also work on nose and other body piercings, that way I never lose any earbuds.
