Can anyone share how I can back up my Netscape mail? (Which files to backup and where they are located)

Thanks

Not sure what later versions do, but version 4 stores the mail in System/Preferences/Netscape Users/<whatevername>/mail(folder) unless you have changed the location from the preferences screen in Netscape. If it isn't there go to the preference screen in Netscape and direct your attention to the section on Mail and Newsgroups. Under 'Mail Servers' and 'Copies and Folders' there are several opportunities to change the location of various mail folders. Each will show an abbreviated pathlist to the folder in question with a choose button next to it. Pressing the choose button will display the entire current location and allow you to change it if you so desire. Once you find the mail folder, drag it to your backup medium and drop it there, or use duplicate from the file menu in the finder to create a copy on the same disk. You can choose individual files from the folder and copy them if you so desire. Netscape isn't picky which folder it uses as long as it is where you told it to look. If you have a new install of Netscape and a backup of your mail, you can throw away the newly installed files and substitute your backup with no ill effects. Not sure what versions 6 an 7 do with their mail.

Thanks for your help!

I am currently using version 6.0 and I think I can figure out where mail folder might be located. It is definately not in the system folder.

You mentioned about new install. Suppose I install netscape, how do i access my back up e-mails?

thanks

You should find the files and back them up before re-installing in my opinion. I have the 6 installer but it has been badmouthed so much I have been afraid to try it. I think look through the preferences to see if you can find a clue as to the whereabouts of the mail files. Or use Sherlock and search for mail.

Yeah, I don't recommend NE 6. It crashes like crazy!

I found the mail folder. My question was that if something happens to my mac and I need to reinstall all the programs, including NE, how will I get access to my back up e-mails. What is the process in which I put my backup e-mails in the new Inbox that I will create when I install NE again?

Once again I will disclaim any knowledge of version 6. In version 4 you can trade the mail folder/files around pretty much at will from the finder. If you make a copy of your mail, you should be able to delete the files created during a fresh install of the browser and replace them wtih your copy. If it is less than a total crash, like a version upgrade or something like that, it will probably keep your existing files. If you are concerned, maybe you should experiment. If you have more than one bootable disk or partition, do an install on another volume and experiment with it. See what you can get by with.
