Other 3G models have worse battery life than the iPhone, Blackberry included. Just the nature of the beast. The 3G radio draws a lot of power. Has nothing to do with the iPhone, but they do get better battery life than other 3G phones out there.

I'm not arguing that, but to say that the iPhone battery is great, certainly sounds pretty fanboyish and has not real basis in reality. I love my iPhone as I stated and its battery life is better then other 3G phones but that doesn't mean its battery life is good. 2 days on a charge (after going through hoops) is pretty poor.

Edit: this is why I think its a good idea that apple doesn't implement background processing to suck what little battery life away further.

Of course you can also get external battery packs for the iPhone. Yes, they can be expensive, but they give you a ton of extra battery power.

There's already a ton of voice-dial apps on the App Store, most of which are free. The app I use is called Gesture Dial... it's much more dependable than voice dial apps, which are affected by background noise.
(No, I'm NOT working for Gesture Dial...)

You can use two fingers to zoom in and out (separate your fingers to zoom in, pull your fingers together to zoom out.)
Although Apple probably thought of this...

Jason

Have you ever tried running the "Public Radio". Great application - get great internet audio streaming of most public radio stations. Guaranteed to run your iPhone out of battery life in about 2 hours. Check Scott's comment on one of the reasons they are not implementing background processes - Battery Life.

I agree!!! Embedded QTVR should work the same way embedded Quicktime movies do now - open full screen and play when tapped. It seems like it would be so easy for Apple to implement this. After all, they were pioneers of the technology.

If they're not going to add it then they should at least add Flash support.

That's the point exactly. It's like providing Spotlight in the Finder, but a whole different Search parameter in iPhoto (Spotlight Comments ignored). It shows a severe lack of consistency within Apple products.

Now, the iPhone OS only needs ONE more feature to fully replace my Newton - handwriting functionality. I type so much at work and at home that tapping out a message on a keyboard holds no interest for me. AND, it is much easier to scrawl a short note than tap it out.

Note I did NOT say handwriting recognition. The Newton allowed a choice - pure digital handwriting on the screen, OR converting that to digital text. Either would be fine for me. Come on Apple, unload inkwell, get over your anti-stylus problem, and give us this killer feature. Good grief, I even used my fingernail on the Newton sometimes, and that did not have a sturdy glass screen. PLEASE!!

Overall, I am pleased with the upgrades they showed. Of my wish list of the 5 most wanted features, 3 were fulfilled and 2 were not (yet).

1. Upgrade Calendar app.
The calendar app needs some additional basic features. It needs to link
to the other core apps so you can add contact/addresses to an event
from your contacts list and then be able to call people or bring up
maps directly from the event view. The app also needs to have better
alerts like the alarm function does. Currently the alerts are too short
and quiet in order to get your attention in a loud environment. More
choice in repeating events is also needed. I can't even create an event
that re-occurs the last Wednesday of every month.

They did not mention any updated to the Calendar app at all except to
support a couple of new standards. I'm still hoping a couple of these
items might be included in the 100 new items.

2. Voice Dialing. My basic Motorola phone was able to do this 5 years ago.

No mention of this either. I doubt seriously if this will be in the upgrade if they didn't mention it.

3. Copy and Paste.

Yup!

4. Landscape view and keyboard in all native apps.

Yup!

5. Global Search. This would be a very useful feature.

This will be good especially when they showed that it searches apps as well. This will really speed up starting an app because now I don't have to flip through 4 or 5 pages to get to the app - just type in a couple of letters until it appears on the search list and run it. I don't think I'll need any upgrades to app management at all except maybe to increase the number of pages allowed to something larger than 9.

Wow, all these complaints. I currently have a Verizon Blackberry and my contract is up in May; I will be getting an AT&T iPhone when the new one hits the street.

I love Verizon, but this Blackberry just doesn't cut it anymore, not even the Storm. If you want multiple signatures or copy and paste, or whatever, then I am more than happy to trade with you. I use the BB for work and personal and find it very boring, its an 8830. I want that iPhone, and only my untimely death will stop me from having it, flaws and all. Don't need video anyway. Video is for perverts and snitches. Take a picture of the snatch if you must and just call the police when you see something criminal go down and move on.

The iPhone is #1 for a reason. I have an iPod Touch and think its the greatest thing since sliced bread. Sitting at my desk now typing on this sorry a$$ dell and listening to TOOL on it right now!

All the complaining about the current or 3.0 shortcomings is just plain dumb to me, it's like you guys are a bunch of spoiled brats, AND I HATE BRATS! Get over yourself and congradulate Apple on yet ANOTHER job well done. At least they listen. Can we say that other companies listen to what we want?

Take Microsoft with the XBOX Live, we said it costs too much, do they lower the price? NO! Look how long it took them to admit the thing is flawed.

Take Sony with PS3 or just about everything they make. We said that their stuff costs too much for the return on what we invest. Do they lower prices or even try to make their goods better, NO! Instead they bombard us with a take it or leave it proposition.

Apple could easily very well tell all of us to kiss their a$$ knowing that we'll buy whatever they are selling anyway, but they don't, they respond and make us even happier. I hate the media and how they just wait for the big story of an Apple failure. I think some of you do the same as you are brainwashed by the Matrix of conformity, when avoiding such lethargecy (spelling) is why you went Mac in the first place!

Point being....Stop hating on the greatest company in the world. You know that, like me, you would kill to work for them and that you feel proud knowing that you too are illuminated in the wonderful World of Apple.

My 2 cents.....

"Landscape mode in every Apple app iPhone users have been asking for this feature since Day One, and iPhone 3.0 offers it “in all key applications.” For example, Mail, Notes, and SMS. Verdict: Fulfilled"

Does that mean landscape view will be implemented in the Calendar app? I REALLY want to be able to view my calendar week-by-week, and landscape view seems most apt to deliver this. Any word on that?

Although that would indeed be a useful feature, we were referring to landscape mode for the onscreen keyboard. (We made that clearer in the original wish-list article on which this article is based.)

Like others commenting here, I'm not sure why some of the wished for items that weren't even mentioned or hinted at yesterday by Apple are listed as "Too early to tell" They should be a "Not fulfilled", until we actually know more. Granted, there could be some interesting nuggets buried in that 100 features list, but I think MacWorld is being too kind here with some of the ratings on the scorecard.

And yet if we had written "Not fulfilled," people would be accusing us of being unfair, given that Apple showed only a handful of the "100 new features" ;)

And the truth is, they'd be right. Apple gave only a cursory overview of a few new features, mentioning a few others even more briefly at the end of the event. So we don't yet know exactly what iPhone 3.0 will bring.

@bringer666, you might want to watch the video. At the end Scott shows a slide of additional features that says "Create meeting invitations," which suggests some level of address book integration.

Also relevant to many comments on this forum, "media scrubber"!

I'm concerned that text selection seems to involve different gestures in different apps, but I'm so stoked about this release, I might join the dev program just to get the beta.

The only thing I cared about is the MMS ... I'm SO happy they're finally giving it to us (3G users)!! Cut/Copy/Paste is okay, but I think there's only been one time in the last 9 months that I wished I had it,... so that's not a biggie to me. Turn-by-Turn GPS will be great.. not as great as MMS though... overall, I'm happy :)
