The New TARP - The Attorney Revenue Propagation effort. Will be just as much a waste of money and effort, all with little result.

Funny as Heck actually! I moved from that awful state many years ago - to the West Coast... Once we arrived out West, we were absolutely amazed at what the mentality of people suing was here vs. back east was. It was very refreshing to know, that not every region in the U.S. is so damn sue happy!!! I was just talking to some of my medical colleagues the other day about it in fact. And, sure enough as I read this craziness - how quickly I learn that it was brought about in no other place than the good ol' Garden State - Home of the "I'm Gonna Sue for Something!" It's absolutely amazing to me, that people even think that way!

I don't see why this isn't ALL AT&T's fault. Why is Apple to blame? Apple's claim of speed is based on what AT&T promised. If anything, Apple should be a co-plaintiff against AT&T.

The award to Apple should be an early termination of the exclusivity deal with AT&T.

I have been continuously disappointed with the 3G-ness of my new iPhone. It should have been MUCH better than my old 2G version. I'm bitter that I am spending 50% more for my data connection and not getting the "twice the speed" as promised.

AT&T needs to deliver or start giving me a discount!

This is a GOOD thing. AT&T runs these 3G commercials non-stop and I have yet to see a truly significant speed difference between the 3G and EDGE networks.
I do agree that Apple has very little blame here. Furthermore, I doubt very much the lawsuit will go anywhere, but perhaps it will send a message.

I'de join in as well. As far as I'm concerned, they misrepresent their service with their "More Bars" bull. I have less service area with ATT than Verizon. Plus their 3G is like dial-up on my iPhone. It's definitely NOT broadband.
Funny thing, I have a 3G card in my laptop and it is blazingly fast. I wonder if they are throttling down the bandwidth on the iPhone because it is so data-intensive. I bet any money this is the case.

Since no government agency vets advertising in the US, lawsuits like this are the only ways to keep companies honest.
I'm not saying that Apple and/or AT&T are in the wrong here - the fact-finding part of the trial will sort that out. But the litigation process is important for consumer protection in the US. Dismissing all litigation as mere greed ignores that.

I'm wondering if this guy checked AT&Ts coverage maps to see if 3G would work in the areas he would need it.
If he can't get reception where AT&T says he should be able to, then I think he has a valid point. Otherwise, no.

I couldn't agree more. I live in Seattle, and I kept getting "not connected to a network" error messages when apparently connected to 3G (the symbol showed), and with full bars. Trying to rule out misconfiguration of my 2-month old iPhone, I called the AT&T support line: the rep told me that they didn't have enough coverage in Seattle (but were "working on it") and suggested I use the Edge network which has more towers. I switched settings, and have had much better reliability with no apparent downgrade in speed. CLEARLY, this is pathetic service, and the "more bars in more places" now irritates the ehck out of me. More bars means they display more bars, whether they have the connection or not. Even displaying the 3G symbol when not connected to the network (like a DHCP server being out of addresses) is a total misrepresentation.

I say sue AT&T for permission to early terminate contract and let us use Verizon with the iPhone. Here I was hoping that the behemoth woudl really take adavanatge of the exclusive iPhone deal and 1) improve their customer service centers (maybe they did, but rating are still low... see Consumer Reports) and 2) expand their coverage to compete with Verizon. Instead they moved like molasses and consequently are dragging Apple down with them. Pathetic.

I hate the lawsuit mentality, but I hate corporate lies and incompetent management even more. Sue them for freedom from a bad relationship, rather than for money, and I'll be very happy.

Oh Apple, why won't you go to T-Mobile or Verizon? Please!!! AT&T sucks!! Worst service I've ever had, having tried no less than 3 smartphones with them.

Dude, those coverage maps are fiction. I know that they focus cell signals to hit certain areas more than others, especially in rural areas.

The 3G areas are also full-of-crap. My 3G card from Verizon is blazingly fast wheras my iPhone is basically (deleted). And it's not just my iPhone, I have 5 other employees that have the same issue. Right in the middle of the city.

The fact is that ATT is a mega-monolithic corporate culture that has no concept of what it is to be customer-centric. Apple learned the hard way, almost got nixed, and clawed its way back to redemption by serving the customer. ATT could give two-(deleted) about you, your feelings, your service level, or anything else for that matter. Its a marriage of convenience for both of them, and I can't wait till Apple starts offering service through Verizon because I'm out-a-here.

I live in Vancouver, WA and "more bars" my browser! I am in their "best" area according to their map and I get 1-2 bars and lots of drops, whereas when I lived in Beaverton, I was in a "moderate" area and got 5 bars and no drops. Several calls to AT&T yield a "sorry" response and maybe it is my house blocking the signals (or the houses behind me) But truly they should not be allowed to advertise so freely when there are 50 things that can affect one's actual coverage.

I dont get it. I have an iPhone and so does my son. Both of us are very happy with the voice and data service. I travel quite a bit in the eastern US for business and it works well everywhere - even in a 17 story Chicago hotel room. Beats the hell out of my company provided Verizon service - and that phone gets replaced every year! My son is a college junior majoring in IT and he could sell those things on campus - people love them! AT&T and Apple seem to have figured it out guys or maybe my family and the students at my son's school are all just lucky.

So... is anyone actually happy with AT&T's coverage? I can count the number of dropped calls I've had on Sprint on one hand - and that's over the past decade or so of service in the midwest.

Edit: Okay, so chilidog and son are happy. Anyone else?
