In regards to changing the default save location, can you simply hvae it be the same location as the original file regardless of folder, instead of specifying one location?

I don't think so. I took a quick look at the configuration file /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf, and I don't see a way to do that. The only variables they give you to play with are $HOME and $USER, which expand out to your home directory and your userid.

I tried this a few weeks back, and went back to the standard OSX method for two reasons: 1) The file naming - I was printing a large number of documents and the file name (which was already like a serial number) was the key to finding the document, with CUPS -PDF I had to rename every file. OSX chose the right name - the filename alone.
2) larger file size - since I was working at home and sending dozens of files each day (sometimes hundreds) file size was a major concern.
So until it lets me control how it generates file names, and until it makes decently compact files, this one went to the Trash Can -- Not a GEM.
