You really think I was not aware of that?! My point was that I thought BEFORE the acquisition or merger, Director had been shelved, by Macromedia, thats all. Director had not been updated since 2004, and now I just learned that Adobe had put out a version in 2008. This is only a .5 upgrade, so in reality, version 11 is the first Director release under the Adobe name. A four year upgrade cycle? All other Macromedia acquired packages have seen two versions since then, so no wonder I though Director was dead.

Well, it certainly wasn't clear from your post that you were aware of it. As you said you used the software 14 years ago - much has happened since then.

You thought wrong. Neither Macromedia or Adobe ever announced any plans to shelve it.
Director MX 10.1.1 was released in March 2006. Director 11 was released March 2008, and now Director 11.5 in March 2009.
At most that's a two year upgrade cycle, which also included the transition from PowerPC to Intel and the Adobe/Macromedia merger where lots of other apps were also being updated for Intel and rebranded.

I could see were you would get that impression. They were very slow in upgrading, and they were very BIG in dropping some of their best titles like SoundEdit Pro and Fontographer.
My first snail mail in 5 years was to Adobe, pleading with them to continue support of Macromedia Director because my job depended on it... and still does. I'm glad for the update and will put in a request for it today.

You are counting .X patches. These do not constitute a new version. The 10.1.1 that you mention was not a full new release. The full 10.0 release was back in 2004 (This kind of proves my point, two years for a .1 patch). But that is beyond my point. Director used to be a pretty big house hold name, right there with Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and other brands. Adobe has not really actively promoted Director and since the inception of Flash, Macromedia always gave more emphasizes and marketing to it than to Director. Everybody knows what Photoshop, Flash and other products are and do, who really knows what Director does? This article even has to go through lengths of explaining what it does. Is Lingo even still in use, or have they switched to something more robust?
