Google plays down security concerns over Docs

If you trust your documents to online applications instead of applications run from your computer then you forfeit security and privacy, period. If you want your documents secure and your private matters private, then you do not entrust such matters to applications running over an open network. I find it amusing how our YouTube/MySpace/FaceBook society complains about privacy and security when they do nothing to retain either and do not go argue against clear violations of said same in many other more important venues.

I signed up for google apps a while ago. I used it for a few weeks putting some confidential docs up on the site and then had a very, very disturbing thing happen. I opened up my laptop one day and instead of being logged in as myself, I was logged in as someone else who wasn't in my company. Somehow my authentication had let me into someone else's account. I immediately contacted google and contacted the person whose account I was logged into. It was unnerving to see my email pop up in their email account. Google gave me a standard reply, but didn't do anything. So, to make my point I listed off the emails I could see in his account, what time they came in, etc... Suddenly the account was logged out and neither he nor Google would acknowledge my emails.
All of this made me think. If I can just open up my laptop and see someone else's account, how many people might have seen our confidential docs. I had entrusted my documents to their system and they couldn't even apologize for their mistake.
If it happened to me, I'm sure it's happened to other people.
