An Airport-ready iMac has an internal Airport card slot - which is not identical to a PCMCIA slot. It is only designed to accept an Apple Airport wireless network card (with the required iMac Airport card adapter). I have read about some reports of "hacks" to allow specific PCMCIA wireless network cards to be used in an Airport card slot - but I don't think the grief is worth the cost savings.

its not really about the cost savings, its to use a cisco 350 card , 100mw and an external antenna to connect to a city wide wireless network. where can I get the info on the "hack"?

thanks!

As I recall, the "hack" depends on the fact that the PCMCIA card substituting for a real Airport card must be completely software compatible with the MacOS Airport software drivers. I suspect that requirement alone rules out what you want to attempt.

As for where I read about the "hack" - it was some time ago in the Airport discussion forum on Apple's web site.
