I'm thinking of writing a book, so thank you VERY much for the Scrivener recommendation. I would also thank you for the Dropbox recommendation, but I think that someone else in this post beat you to it!

The first app I install on every new Mac, or after every MacOSX install, is DragThing. Tied for second are BBEdit and GraphicConverter.

Waiting for rescue, I would want to pass my time with "UniSuduko". The ship would be there before I knew it!

My desert island app ?----Google Earth 5.
Because I'd have my WildBlue satellite internet dish alongside me, too.

It's gotta be Photoshop. Where would I be without it?

Assuming I stumbled on an IMac as I thrashed my way through whatever jungle there is on the island (why are these islands always in the tropics?) and some genie popped up and gave a choice of one third-party application, it might have to be BibblePro. This also assumes that my camera made ot with me to the island. Text edi would be enough to write the book, Preview would be enough to see the pix when I wanted to, and various other built-in apps from Apple would suffice - but Bibble pro would have to be there for my raw files. Of course, I had best be rescued before my hard drive is full, or I could become very frustrated, indeed.

Graphic Converter. I enjoy iPhoto and use it daily. However, there are those files that need converted to jpg or something else. Then I turn to Graphic Converter, convert the files, and off I go!

Being an artist and designer, I've got to go with some kind of creative program and I suppose I'd choose ArtRage for it's easy tablet friendly interface, but I'd surely miss having PhotoShop, Painter and Illustrator since I could only pick one!

ArtRage would give me all the art tools I need to draw pictures of my new island home and family. Just hope someone else brought a printer!

Though I'm a writer who uses mostly NIsus Writer for my work, I spend all of my fun time with Photoshop - almost daily. I could make do with Text Edit - on the idea that I'd eventually escape the island and transfer all my writing to Nisus Writer. Likewise, I could keep a temporary journal (all writers keep journals) with Text Edit - and later transfer the entries to MacJournal.
Reasonable for some to wonder: what images would I have for "stock" to use Photoshop on? Easy - I always have a digital camera with me. I would take pictures of myself, of the indigenous wildlife and scenery and of course I'd take photos of the many scantily clad native lasses I hallucinated. ;-)
So yes: it's definitely Photoshop for me.

Super Duper! by ShirtPocket is the first 3rd-part app I install on all my macs and those of my clients. It adds an extra layer of protection in that it provides an avenue to make a complete backup of your entire system -- OS with updates, applications, and all of the user's data, and works well in tandem with Time Machine's daily backups. SD is especially useful to save a copy of your system configuration before doing Software Update, just in case the latest Apple updates do not play nicely with your particular system and its installed applications -- you have the option to restore your system quickly from your SD "clone" of your system.

I cannot believe all the people who choose MS Word!
That has got to be one of the most unintuitive and bizarre app. that I have ever had the misfortune to ever use.
Maybe, just maybe if used only for text, one could get used to, learn, and turn off the quirky usually unhelpful "help" preferences, but for any kind of page layout tasks, it is the pits! Give me InDesign or Quark any day over this program.
