OMG ..... TEH SKY IS FALLING!!!!!
. . .
good gosh .... a WEB PAGE has a temporary glitch ... and it's catastrophic?
and, is it a really, really important web page crucial to the business world or something ??
no ... a news site - one of - well - lots to choose from
boy .. if I was a subscriber .. I'd ask for my money back ...
there should probably be a class action suit
I guess nothing of actual import is happening, I'd presume

I wish we had real choices in search. Everything I've tried is not consistently as good as Google.
If you know something that competes well with Google, I'd love to hear about them. Also, if you have ones that beat Google for certain fields, I'd like to hear about them, too.

That's an odd sort of sentiment, but I think I understand what you're getting at. But don't hold your breath. Search engines are about as close to a functioning free market situation as we have today. People go to what's actually good. There aren't any real viable alternatives today because creating something as good, let alone better, would require a huge up-front resource expenditure with really not a lot of prospect in the way of return.
Could be worse. You could have a situation where the 800 pound gorilla sucked but people used it because it was supported by someone with deep pockets and/or other significant but substantially unrelated influence. I still remember years ago reading a letter in a magazine that said, almost verbatim, "I hope Netscape wins, but until they do I'm going to use IE."
