AT&T to sell 3G netbooks across U.S.

Until 3G data plans get rid of the ridiculously low data caps I'm not interested in committing to a two year contract just to get a few hundred dollars knocked off a laptop that is borderline underpowered today, even more so in two years.
Because of the iphone's size it goes with you in your pocket and is always there for quick reference. A laptop it is not but it is super convenient. But if I am going to go to the trouble of breaking out the laptop its going to be for more serious browsing and/or media streaming. Which means I'll hit those 5GB caps way too easily.

So why can't I buy an iphone from ATT that has a data plan only? We're locked into VZ for voice through our employer and also because of VZ's superior voice network in many locations that we travel to on business. I'd love to ditch the VZ EVDO card and $60/month data plan for our macbook pros in favor of a data only iphone with tethering. Concur with the ridiculous 5GB caps. Either the cell carriers are serious about data or not. People will pay $$ for robust, reliable unlimited wireless data.

Ugh! Another data plan to add to the list. Home internet service, phone data service, kids texting plan. Now this.
Just buy a Netbook outright for $300 from Newegg, and use open Wi-Fi and/or 3rd party phone tethering (may or may not be hip with ones carrier, but still available).

How long will Apple sit on the sidelines of this obviously exploding market?
Until they can make a satisfactory profit from it without resorting to selling legions of poorly-made machines. Alternatively, until they can be sure that the whole thing is not a fad, which is not clear at this point.

Hope to see an Apple tablet? in June!
I wouldn't hold my breath; that one's been coming for years.
