Can't boot from FW pocketdrive

A brand new PB G4 and I cannot boot from an external FW disk (40 Gig pocketdrive) with OS 9 and OS 10.2.
The Bootmanager does see them but OS 9 doesn't even show the smiling classic and OS 10 shows the mac logo and than carves the screen with strange lines?
Is this what Apple means by you cannot boot from OS 9 anymore in the future?
Also starting from the official OS 9.2.1. CD doesn't work and ends in a type 11 error with and without the shift key. :-(
I only want OS 9 on my PB because OS 10.2 resides on my other PB and I need the HD space.

Hope someone can help.
