I've been meaning to buy and install Jaguar on my iBook (Graphite, RAM maxed out at 320MB) for a while now... I've held off while my desktop G4 has been in repair, but it's due back tomorrow and I'm raring to go.

I was going to network the two of them, copy all the data from my iBook to the G4, wipe the iBook and install Jaguar on a fresh disk. I can go straight to Jaguar, right? Also, how do I go about getting Classic on there? Does Jaguar install Classic? Do I need OS 9.2 (currently, my iBook only has 9.1)?

Also, I'm having a weird AppleTalk problem with the iBook, being that it doesn't seem able to switch on AppleTalk in OS 9. I don't have my original OS 9 discs here for the iBook so I don't know what to do really. I was thinking about installing a bare-bones version of Jaguar, using Jaguar's AppleTalk to communicate with the G4 and copy the HD over, before erasing everything and starting from scratch. Is this feasible or am I forgetting anything here?

Yes - you can "go straight to Jaguar". In fact, a clean install of Jaguar is the best way to put it on your Mac. You need to install MacOS 9.1 (or 9.2) separately.

File transfer over an ethernet connection between MacOS 9.x and 10.x is done using TCP/IP - you do not need to use Appletalk at all. For detailed instructions see http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n43015 .

HMB, the problem is when I switch on File Sharing, it says that AppleTalk must be enabled. It can't enable AppleTalk. I've gone to the AppleTalk control panel to try enabling it from there, but it won't work. It just freezes for a bit and then acts like nothing happened.

(admittedly, that wasn't an OS X thing, but don't move this mods!)

Either way, I just want to be done with OS 9 and move on to X. Does the Jaguar retail box come with an OS 9 disc or do I have to go look for my OS 9.1 disc myself? (grumble, grumble)
