I have a network of 2 computers at home with airport. All the instructions say to connect your cable modem to the WAN port. When i do this, all i get is a 10.1.xxx type IP address and explorer won't connect to the internet, but when i connect the ethernet cable to the LAN port, the DHCP works proprly to get the IP address from the server. I know it works and i should leave well enough alone, but want to do it correctly. Is there a way to connect to the WAN port and have DHCP get IP addresses from the server? One problem I may be having since i'm connected with the LAN is that once connected, I cannot run the airport utility or change settings. Any ideas?

This is how I got it to work with my cable modem.

1. Plugged in the cable modem to the base station.

2. Used the internet.

I had Zero configuration and it worked fine.

Why are you not able to run the airport setup? Is it giving you an error? Maybe you could do a reset on your base station and try again?

I have a DSL Modem @ home and the other day was setting up the base station ....took me 4 hours.

What i would suggest you to do is to go to Base station admin and set it up from there.

Your modem connects to WAN port. If your macs can't see base station over the wireless connection, then plug network cable to your mac and another end to LAN port on your base station. Then you schould be ok to set it up.

Also you will have to know the following:

Does your provider give you specific IP address?
Username / Password

Your AirPort base station is acting as DHCP server that's why you get 10.1... ip

PM me if you need more help.
