I just installed an Apple AirPort card (driver v2.0.2) into my iBook (Dual USB, OS9.1), antenna securely plugged in. However, when I try to connect to the campus wireless network, AirPort fails to find anything to connect to. It tells me that I have not selected an AirPort network, but it does not give me anything to select; choosing "allow closed networks" does not help either. I am also missing the signal strength bar that is usually there; the one in the control strip shows nothing.

The network I'm trying to connect to is a pretty strong 802.11 Lucent Orinoco network that operates within a 1-mile radius of campus, and the base antenna for my dorm floor is -in- my room - so I don't think signal strength is the problem, plus my roomate's WiFi works just fine. I've done all the necessary registration, and followed all the instructions that campus IT has given me regarding DHCP, etc.; my TCP/IP is set to connect with AirPort and use DHCP.

I've tried an Apple Hardware Test, and (although totally irrelevant) a PRAM reset and DesktopFile trash with TechTool, for good measure. None of that has produced any results.

Any ideas? :-

For reference, here is the window I get when I open the AirPort application:

(click for image)

Notice how there is no signal strength bar where there should be one.

After you installed the Airport card, did you run the Airport Setup assistant? That will activate your card and configure the proper settings.

I tried to run the AirPort Setup Assistant, but it first said

quote:
The Setup Assistant is now ready to configure your computer to access the network "^0." AirPort network settings will be made active.

Then, when I click "Go Ahead," it gives me a red stop-sign error message and says

quote:
The assistant was unable to connect you to the wireless network you selected. Please make sure that you are in range of the base station and that it is turned on.

[The antenna is only a few feet away (I even tried from an inch away), and my roomate's WiFi is working very well and getting "excellent" reception (to quote Windows XP).]
