TDK CD BURNER NOT RESPONDING

I just got a TDK Toast Cd burner about a month ago for my mac OS9, and it worked great up until a few weeks ago, and its driving my crazy! It says NO CD BURNER FOUND, or else it says SCANNING, but it just keeps on scanning forever. I've tried reinstalling it, but that didn't work. Someone suggested restoring the whole computer. Is that necessary?
