One of the features of my camera (Canon Powershot S30) is that it has a movie mode with sound: QVGA (320x240 up to 30 sec), and Q2VGA (160x120 up to 120 sec) Is there anyway to import this into iMovie? if so, how?

Just purchased a ibook this weekend and I'm here at work thinking of all the stuff I want to try when I get home.

any pointers would be greatly appreciated as I'm a new user.

iMovie can only import and work with DV files. QT Pro can convert most formats to DV, but if you have MPEG files (which your camera might create) it is more difficult. MPEG files are multiplexed (or muxed), meaing the audio and video tracks are blended into one MPEG track. If you convert an MPEG to DV, you will lose the sound. There are some free apps that can demux the file, but it is not as simple as dragging and dropping your captured movie into iMovie.

Thanks Jon,

You wouldn't happen to know any of the names or have any recommendations of those free apps? If I can "demux" the mpegs as you say and then convert, I'd like to try.

There's an app called bbDEMUX, which you can find at versiontracker.com

I didn't think that the Canon cameras produced "muxed" videos. IIRC, they are Quicktime encoded AVI files. So QT Pro should be all you need.

OTOH, Sony digicams produce muxed MPG files, so I'll need to learn how to de-mux the file and recombine them with my camera.

Good choice of a camera, Logan. Get Appleworks Pro. $29 .. no headaches. You should know that the S30 video is very low resolution though, as is probably true of most digital cameras that take movies.

I got the Canon S40 last month. Very cool cameras.

As for the video importing into iMovie, I do it with Quicktime Pro. I convert the S40's avi file into a DV stream then import that into iMovie, sound and all.
