I'm hoping that the new servers come out with more aggressive price points ... but I'm not sure if Apple's willing to risk people buying an ugly rack-mount and dropping it on the floor of their house if it's too much cheaper ;-).

That's the big delema...

Though, like you say, the potential saviour is OS X Server. If they refuse to sell the machines 'bare', or with OS X client, they can punch up the price with the software...

If you want to be really nasty, you rig the machine so it won't accept client at all...

BUT, the selling point, even at the higher price, is the fact that you can now get, theoretically speaking 'cause I don't see official specs, a 1 U Rackmount Mac that can replace your 4-6 U G4 Towers or, heaven forbid, an iMac that you're currently paying through the nose to co-lo because of the space they take up...

Pay more now, save in user fees later. That's how they should be pushing them.

griffman, I posted this question on the other topic, but was not sure if you were still following that thread. Does this "Extrem Quarz" mean that OS will also be faster in launching applications and in Web browsing?

Somewhat.

If you can accelerate the rendering of the screen, you'll speed up the applications...

Startup benefits will likely be minimal, too many other variables (like the speed at which you can pull the data from the hard disk to memory). Web Browsing depends entirely on how much of the problem is to do with drawing the image, and how much of it is to do with other factors...

Dave - Good points; I forgot about the space usage charges! I think they will be Server-only, but wether they'll lock-out client or not, who knows (we will in a week!).

kaefer - Extreme Quartz will help with window redrawing. So it should have some impact on web browsing, but I don't know exactly where the delay is (although I must say I don't experience near the slow downs that I've seen reported; I tested a few large sites this weekend with Mozilla on the Mac and the PC, and they were close to identical - the PC was usually quicker, but not by countable seconds). If the delay is mainly TCP related, perhaps some of the other behind the scenes stuff will help there (new IP model, for example?).

I doubt Extreme Quartz will help at all with application launching, but the multithreaded Finder might, but again, I've got no clue what causes the current launch times. If it's activity which can be threaded, the new Finder feature should help. Personally, I just leave 'em all running :-).

new IP model

I'm wondering if this will resolve the issues around X being limited to a single DNR per application at any given time...

There's been a bit of teeth gnawing about that by certain Mail server developers...

Getting back to the rack server, wonder if they'll fix the glitch they seem to have introduced with 10.1.4 that won't let OS X run headless with the newer nVidia/ATI cards. Might be a bit of an important issue to resolve, that one...

Will quartz extreme accerlate all existing programmes in OS 10.2, or will developers have to specifically implement it?

And now the really big question is "When?".

The thing I hate about previews like this is that I want the thing NOW.

I'm so bad that way.

And another thing: the fact that Quartz Extreme needs 32 megs for optimal performance has to be one fo the reasons the new TiBooks were announced when they were because now they have the video power to run Jaguar. I guess Steve didn't want a lot fo cranky press about how the professional level PowerBooks didn't have the power to make optimal use of QE.

Apple's PR blurb says "late summer". The autumnal equinox, which marks the end of summer and the start of autumn (fall) in the US is September 23rd this year.

Hmm ... Apple's event schedule shows Seybold SF on Sept 10-12 and Apple Expo Europe on Sept 10-14. Could be either one of those and still make the technical definition of "late summer".

Personally, I'm hoping for early August, but planning on October :-).

I, too, am hoping for August, griffman. Hopefully, Apple releases faster iMacs at MWNY, and I will jump on the opportunity to buy one of those babies. I would REALLY enjoy faster (G4) iBook. I love being mobile, but the PowerBook is just out of my price range. At this pace, however, I doubt we will get a G4 iBook this year.

I just bought my (beloved) ibook 600 DVD/CD-RW (640 MB RAM) a few weeks ago. I've been using Mac OS X since the Beta on an imac G3 400 DVD (384 MB RAM) before. Although I already liked OS X all way long, the REAL fascination came onlly when I started using it on the ibook. Due to its power the ibook gives me a much better perfomance which I would never want to miss again.

BUT when Jaguar will be sold and my ibook should not be up to it anymore, I am quite sure that I will try to sell this one and buy a newer one .....(of course only if Jaguar keeps all the promises...... images/icons/wink.gif )

[Btw, I also use a lot of older hardware, most often switching to systems which require less processor/graphic power ->i.e. Windows has been replaced by linux. Just because I do not see any sense in buying a new box every few months (and I don't have the money for it..) ]

But OS X is a reason to step out of my way....

Let me get this straight. The iBook that I purchased 3weeks ago and that Apple is still selling today wil not have be able to take advantage of "Quartz Extreme". I realize that Apple can not support some older hardware but this too much.

im in the same boat as you, except my ibook got here today, this is all a disappointment to me because i dont have the money to buy a more powerful computer to fully enjoy jaguar

when i came to these forums i was recently converted from pc to mac, and after spending some time looking at different posts i feel that i have a much better understanding of mac, or should i say computers in general, than before
thank you
nate

While you can't enjoy Quartz Extreme, you'll still be able to enjoy the rest of Jaguar's benefits (and it's bound to be faster all around anyway). I'm disappointed my Pismo won't benefit, but it just gives me something to look forward to when I get a new computer.
