No Quartz Extreme on my iMac?

Granted, I won't really give two hoots if Jaguar runs fast, but it's a disappointment, all the same.

The integrated search function, well, thank God! I've been waiting for the capability to locate a file without launching a second app since System 7.5. Thank you thank you thank you Apple!

I'm also glad to see Spring-loaded folders return.

I hope there are more enhancements to Jaguar then listed on the Apple site. I'm a little disappointed--I wanted more features. I mean, features that every Mac user can benefit from, not just Internet features like iChat or features like InkWell or accelerator features I can't benefit from. I need features I can use too--basic features that enhance my use of the Mac OS.

So I hope Apple has more in store for us than what they're saying, or I'll be mighty disappointed.

I, too, am a little dissappointed, but knowing Apple they'll have plenty of goodies that they haven't told us about.

It seems that they've released details of things that will make the majority of Mac outsiders sit up and listen: integrated chat, faster performance, lusher graphics, built-in search and spring-loaded folders. Hopefully though they've included all the goodies that true Mac fans have been crying out for like labels, a decent start-up screen, collapsing windows etc. We can only wait and hope.

I'm glad I've made arrangements with Apple to pay $250 for the GeForce 4 Ti when it becomes available. I understand that 128 mb for Quartz Extreme is probably overkill, but with new technology like this, I am sure the more, the better.

When the Ti does ship, I know many GeForce 4 MX 64mb cards will flood eBay and the Mac marketplace. It might be a good idea to pick one up, even if you have a 32 mb GeForce 2 MX or something. It seems to me that this technology is gonna be moving forward, not backward, in the future.

dcipjr, what kinds of features are you missing, outside of the two you mentioned?

If labels are critical, get and use SNAX today; it supports them quite nicely.

A couple of other observations:

1. Is it me, or is Sherlock 3 essentially an implementation of Watson?

2. Why no iTunes 3?

It's more than official over here. I have turned off Classic at boot, and I don't expect to ever launch it again now that Macromedia is on the ball.

And I don't miss it one bit.

I love X. Just simply love it.

Well, griffman, I'm not exactly missing any features in particular (especially because Spring-Loaded Folders are back)

I just want more ones to drool over! images/icons/grin.gif

I'm talking OS-level features, like reimplementation of old Mac features and new stuff to enhance our Mac experience.

I'm not disappointed at all with what Apple showed us, but I'm looking forward to more features, ones that will benefit all users. Enhancements to the Finder, included applications, etc.(I would love to see TextEdit develop, for instance)

Jaguar looks awesome. I'm eager to see what other features are rolled into it. All I'm saying is that I'm hoping Apple has some more stuff up its sleeve to make Jaguar even cooler.

Let me clarify: I'm impressed with what I saw...I'm just saying that I hope Apple has even more surprises for us.

Don't forget iChat! (AIM compatible)

That looks to be the most annoying part of Jaguar for me, actually. I understand that Apple is only trying to extend its bubble, but that's just a little too much. The screenshots for iChat look rediculous, with the interface looking unnecessarily bloated. And I don't even like AIM for X that much either. The only thing that's keeping me from going to Adium (http://www.adiumx.com) full-time is its lack of file transfer and full away message support. (which are coming)

It's good to see that they've re-introduced text-to-speach in Jaguar.
More feedback by sound would be a good investment by Apple - I don't see Microsoft on the ball in that department...

iChat seems pretty useless as it has been presented so far. Unless this is apple's answer to windows messenger (formerly netmeeting and msn messenger) which will include things like voice chat, web-cam conferencing, shared remote desktop software, etc, why should I care about ichat? Because it is made by apple? ONce again, it is possible that it is a lot more than what apple has presented so far, but as of right now, I see no use for it.

And another thing; why are all the new iapps going to have that brushed metal look? I think I like the white+pinstripe look of mail better.

If it's going to make such a big difference then maybe we'll see some 3rd party upgrade cards to up the spec of video on older models. You can already put a 600mhz and Firewire into a old iMac....

Pieere, it seems unlikely that any "upgrades" are going to add 2x AGP and a video card with 32 mb (or even just the 2x agp) into systems with no AGP support.

Earlier in this thread, I theorized:
quote:
I would guess that, between now and then (Jaguar ship date), we'll see iBooks available with 32mb VRAM cards. Maybe at the July Macworld...
Well, I sort of got it right :-). The new iBooks were actually announced today, but they do NOT have 32mb of VRAM. What they do have is an ATI Radeon card using AGP2x and 16mb of VRAM.

According to Apple, 32mb is needed for an ideal setup, but 16mb of RAM will work for Jaguar Extreme. Only time and testing will tell how well Jaguar works on the new iBooks, but at least now the second part of my hypothesis is true:

quote:
Then they can state that Jaguar will offer Quartz Extreme on "all currently shipping" Macs.
As of today, you cannot buy a Mac which will not support, in some manner, Quartz Extreme on Jaguar when it ships at the end of the summer.

Anyone interested in a 2001 model iBook G3/500 with Airport in excellent condition? ;-)
