surge protector question

does the Apple AC adaptor used with Power Books function as a surge protector?

No. A good-quality surge protector from a name-brand company like APC, Panamax, Monster, or Belkin is a must. Try to get one with a 2000+ Joule surge protection rating.
It costs quite a bit more, but it's worth it when you consider you're getting a really good quality product that will protect you from anything. I'd count on paying $50-$200.

I might add..... surge suppressors over a period of time loose their ability to stop those spikes and become fancy extension cords. Some have a light that will remind you it's useful life is gone.
Always un-plug during a thunderstorm.
