Do you need Postscript capability? Do you need Ethernet connectivity? What resolution do you need (600 - 1200 dpi or more)? Lots of questions to answer in order to narrow the field, although Xante has some good printers that do all of the above, but depending on your needs, they may be a bit high priced.

I am also in the market for a new laser printer. My old, wonderful NewGen is struggling with OSX (via gimp print). I need network capability on an ethernet, postscript, and a minimum of 600x1200 dpi. Oh yes. Budget. So many things to buy these days... I'd like to keep it under $500 if possible. I have a G4 and a TiBook running OSX, a G4 running 9.2, and a G3 running 8.5 - all will be using it. (Although the G3 will be upgraded soon - don't let the system 8.5 machine rule anything out). Suggestions?

Personally, I don't think it's possible to find all that for $500. Postscript always adds a lot to the price. I was looking about a year ago for a B/W Postscript 3 printer with Ethernet, 11x17 capability and 1200 dpi and the best I could find was a Minolta and a Xerox that were around the $1000 level. One of my concerns was to find true Postscript, not Postscript Emulation. It's been a while, but I just remember reading that Emulation didn't always provide accurate results. You might wish to check the Adobe site for info on Postscript / Postscript Emulation and a list of compatible printers.
Good luck, and let me know what you find, as my LaserWriter 4/600 PS is getting a bit long in the tooth and may need to be retired soon.

I also needed 11X17 (it actually goes to 12X18), ethernet and PS capability. I tried a Minolta and it worked well but the images were not always as accurate (size wise) as I need them to be, sometimes the images were skewed as much as a sixteenth of an inch. We do some forms printing, so size accuracy is important.
I ended up with a HP 5000N. It works perfectly in 9 and X and Is stable dimensionally.
Again it may be more than you need budget wise and capabilities, but without more info this is what I would recommend.

The HP is PS emulation.
However, I also have a Konica digital photocopier that is "True PS" and I have never had a problem with the HP or noticed anything different at all with the output between the two. And I do a lot of printing to both devices (almost all PS) on a daily basis and have for three years with the HP and for around 1 year on the Konica.
