Yeah, I agree that especially in the tech world four months does seem long enough, but after dropping $918CDN after tax it still stings.
As for the dock, yes, you need it to connect. That's the point.
And the color screen issue. I was wondering with all of the rumors that was going to be one of the main updates to this new rev if they would actually do it. My theory is that they have to hold some things back so that they can come out with another easy rev update in another half year and sell some more. They give it a color screen and some other lame bells and whistles (ahem, Solitaire, Brick and Parachute) and attract a whole bunch of new and repeat customers. People clammer to sell their old 5gb iPod to justify the "new" one.

I'm not too jolly over the fact that the iPods battery life is still not sensational.
It's about as good as that big Archos FM Recorder that does just about anything one would want their MP3 player to do.
And wasn't Apple suppose to come out with a 40GB iPod?

I just checked and watched the first couple of minutes of the presentation. You do NOT need the dock. The cable that plugs into the back of the dock can also be plugged straight into the iPod. It is however a different cable design than the regular FW as the connector is much flatter.
I might be sold on the new ones afterall...

I think that's only for the 10gb as it does not come with a dock. It comes with a wire that has the same port as the dock. There is no direct firewire connection on the actual iPod as the previous models have had. The 15gb and 30gb versions have a firewire that plugs into the dock but the iPod itself has to be plugged into the dock/dock wire.

Personally, I dislike the pricing scheme. While the space is increasing by 50% and then 100%, the prices still are increasing only by $100 across the board. I would have liked to see pricing changed to 300, 350, and 500 to reflect space changes, or have the hard drive space changed to 10, 20, and 30 to reflect linear pricing. Right now, it makes the 30 GB seem like the greatest deal, the 15 GB seem like a rip off and the 10 GB look like a fair price. That's just my take on it - consitering that I was opting for the middle option.

Where did you buy one? The Apple store in Costa Mesa didn't even have any.

Sorry Peter, I should have explained better...I bought mine from Apple Online. When I said I liked the looks of it, I meant from what I saw in the pictures /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

In the iPod commercial where they said it was smaller and lighter than two compact discs. Did they mean with the case holding the discs, or just the CD?

Hmm...Here's my order status:
IPOD 10G-USA M8976LL/A On or before 01/02/2004 $269.00
Will ship on or before January 2, 2004? WTF is up with that? I'm sure that must be a mistake /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
It says on Apple's website, "Order today and get your new iPod by Friday afternoon." I don't need it on Friday, but it would sure be nice to have my new iPod while on my cruise next week /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

In reply to:

Anyone notice the addition of the backlight button in the main menu of the updated software? Now, instead of going through three menus to adjust it you can just turn it on or off at will. Sweet.

You could always turn the backlight on and off by pressing and holding the menu button...

You don't need the dock to connect. There's a firewire port (slightly modified I guess) on the bottom that connects to the dock that connects to the cable on all models, not just the 10gb.
Anyway....
It'll be sad to see my dear old (old..lol.. I got it two months ago /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif ) 5gb Lucille go, but I can't wait to get a 15... maybe 10, depending on the limited income of a 14-year-old, though I'll be working this summer and I get to go to the Apple Store in Minneapolis (first time in one /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif) and pick one up...hooray!
I like all the interface improvements, but I wish the buttons had stayed...I like them better how they were, but after using one later in June I guess I'll decide.

That's what I was saying. There's a cable, which is all the 10gb model comes with, that plugs into the dock. It's a long thin port on one end and firewire in the other (for the Mac). But if you want the dock for the 10gb you have to buy it separately. That's according to the web site. The 15 and 30gb come with the dock. The point that was being made previously was that it's not a firewire as we know them and as they connect to our other firewire devices. It's 6pin on one end and the new connection for use exclusively with the iPod on the other. So you can connect using just a wire, a firewire of sorts, but you will still have to have that specific wire as opposed to just any 6 to 6 that you may have. Again it all comes down to more gear.

To clarify. Steve himself said something like this:
The new cable can either be plugged into the iPod directly or into the dock. The iPod can then be placed into the dock.
Ergo: You do NOT need the dock as the cable that is supplied will also fit straight into the iPod. This goes for all models. 10, 15, and 30 GB.

Hi sebimeyer,
Since I count on you for all iPod advise, what model would you buy? For an extra $100.00 you get 5GB, a craddle, case, and remote.
I'm thinking I will only spend enough for the 10GB model since I use my B&O headset, and don't care about the case or cradle. What are your thoughts all wise and mighty iPod expert? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
