I think Krunk is right, in that he is pointing out that the new iPods don't have an actual firewire port in them any more. Apple supplies a cable with the specialized plug in one end (for the iPod) and a regular firewire plug in the other (for your computer). If you opt for the dock, you get TWO cables: one as just described, and a second one that is probably a regular firewire cable for connecting the dock's port to the computer's.
Or should I lay off the afternoon martinis?

No no no no no...
There is ONE cable. You can EITHER use it to connect the dock to the computer, then put the iPod in the dock. OR connect the iPod to the computer WITHOUT the dock.
I am not sure what model I would want myself. Right now I am considering selling my 20 GB and getting the 30 GB. Mainly to be able to back things up to it and of course solitaire. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
The 10 GB is probably the best value though. I personally don't think I will use the dock either, as I have a portable and would rather not drag another anchor around.
I have spoken. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I am not an expert but I use my iPod 24/7 in every imaginable way (no, not THAT way), so I guess I pick some tricks up.

Well...I must say that ordering that 10gb this afternoon was kind of an impulse buy. After buying it and several hours later actually carefully reading about the three different models, I decided it was silly for me to buy the 10gb. I originally ordered the 10gb plus the dock, when for only a little bit more money I'd get 15gb, the dock, the remote, and a case. So I called Apple and canceled; ordered a 15gb instead!!

I put in my order for a 30GB minutes after the store came back online. Scheduled for a Tuesday delivery.
Anyway, I'm really excited. I'm re-encoding my 200cd collection in AAC 320kbps, which will take up slightly more space than the 192kbps MP3, but based on limited listening, the sounds is greatly improved. I'm anxious for my iPod, but this will fill up my time well. I tried the 'Convert to AAC' in iTunes 4, but what that does is make a very good quality copy of a 192kbps file, which wasn't suitable for me.
As for apple's music service, it looks sweet as well. No international support, however, but I can use a US credit card. The previews are terrific, and the ease of use and integration is wonderful. The selection is surprisingly large, I just wish apple would offer a high-bit version of the music for download in addition.
So, I think the new products look GREAT! The thinness and lightness of the iPods is great - my previous 20GB 'pod was great, but it was thick and heavy. This should be a great improvement. How they got that stuff in there I'll never know.

I second that. I loved my case from Waterfield, but it won't be close to fitting now. It could take weeks or months for a new one, and i'll need something in the menatime, as inconvienent to my style of use as that may be.

In reply to:

In the iPod commercial where they said it was smaller and lighter than two compact discs. Did they mean with the case holding the discs, or just the CD?

Are you seriously asking this?

Yeah, I want to see how Apple is fibbing this time.
They only mention the CD which sounds to me like just two plain CDs. But then they show the CDs in their containers.
Just checking to make sure if it was another exageration.

Kenny-
Steve said that the new iPods are lighter than 2 CD's and their cases, and thinner than 2 CD's and their cases stacked on top of one another , he did not mention smaller. If you want to hear for yourseld go to apple web site, as the speech is available on the Quicktime part of the site. So NO Steve did not fib or lie or anything else.

I hope ExtremeMac makes a line of cases for the new iPods. I loved my faux Camel-suede case for my old 20gb /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

THe new iPods are a joy for me because
A They don't add any new features I really want,
B With everyone selling theirs to get the latest and greatest, I may be able to get one on the cheap /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Just thought I'd share that I added a review to this web page that contains photos comparing the old (ha! last week it was the coolest one ever!) 20 GB iPod with the new models. It includes a first impression and a short review.

Nice pictures, it appears as though it wasn't very packed? Odd, you were allowed to take pictures inside the apple store, when I tried today I was told I am not allowed to take pictures. Oh well, I still got off a few pictures inside and a lot of pictures of the masses of people waiting in the long line at the Apple Store in Valley Fair.

They know me pretty well there, so I guess they let me be. One of the staff though thought it would be funny to demand of me to hand the camera over as it would have to be send in "for Steve Jobs to check out" I said "sure, as long as he signs it and sends it back to me once he is done."
I didn't push it though and stopped taking photos. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
