I've heard this is a common problem, but i searched around here and couldnt find a good answer before i gave up. I had a look on the Apple support website, and they are blaming my CD-Rs. I use Kodak Gold, the really good ones, and as far as I know these CD's are up to 40x. My iBook burns at 4x only, in iTunes and DiscBurner, in OS X Jaguar (10.2.4).
Is there any known solution to this problem? I always make sure I check the burn speed, I've tried maximum and 16X. I own a dual USB white iBook with Toshiba Combo Drive.
I wouldn't mind burning at 16X, or is 4X all I can do? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

You'll only be able to burn at 4x. The speed of the CD-R has nothing to do with your burning speed.

I thought he could burn at 16x. At least that's the the spec according to Apple. As far as CD-Rs having nothing to do with the burning speed, that's not entirely correct. It's kind of like tires on a car. You have your regular old tires and then you have your Z rated tires. Sure, you can drive at higher speeds with regular tires but Z rated ones give you "stability" at those higher speeds.
Also, how do you know it's only burning at 4X? I know that I used the higher rated speed media and it takes a little longer because OS X is doing some checking to make sure the disc is valid.

I thought he said that he had a 4x Combo Drive. His post is kinda ambiguous. My response was based on him having a 4x burner.

I see your point, but I was refering to the fact that you could use 40x media in a 4x burner and you'd still only be able to burn at 4x. The burner will always be the limiting factor in burning speed.

Sorry, I'm not sure at the maximum potential of my burner. I own a white G3 600 iBook with combo drive and it's the Toshiba combo, not the Sony combo. I thought i could burn up to 16X with those specifications, but I could be wrong. I've heard of many reports on the same problem.
You see, I picked up this laptop on eBay about two months ago and I didn't get any software CDs or Hardware Tester CDs. I could probably get ahold of one.
I want to burn faster.

According to Apple's specifications (which, by the way are available on the web for any model), the original 600MHz iBook (early 2002) has the following drives:
12inch - 4x4x6x24x (i.e. writes CD-R/CD-RW at max 4x)
14inch - 8x8x8x24x (ie. writes CD-R/CD-RW at max 8x)
The followup 600MHz machines (May 2002) had the 8x burner regardless of screen size. The 16x burners came out with the 700&800MHz machines.

Another option is to get Toast Titanium. Which will allow you to test the maximum speed of your burner. This may help to reduce some errors as well.
Recently I got a fast burner (52x) external combo drive. However, upon testing I found that the best speed to burn from my BW G3 is 24x and from my iBook 48-52x.
