Last night while visiting my cousin, I stayed up until almost 3 am watching him play Neverwinter Nights on his Gateway. Remembering that this was supposed to have been ported to Mac sometime late last year, I decided I had to have it. Unfortunately I discovered it's not yet available for Mac gamers.
I want this really really badly. I wonder how long it's going to be before Neverwinter Nights makes it to us?

I think it will be a while yet. I too fell in love with this game when I played it at a friend's house. The Mac page on the Bioware site (the original developer?) hasn't been updated since Feb. 14th, although people said some early betas were showcased at MWSF in January.
Now that development has been passed on to MacSoft, it may take a while, since I doubt they want it to compete with Dungeon Siege, which is due out soon, and similar in style. One can only hope.
In the meantime, I discovered that Baldur's Gate II is similar in style and a lot of fun, if you want something of the same ilk to tide you over.
Cheers,
Dan

Thanks for the info.
I've been playing Baldur's Gate II since Christmas before last; you're right, it's a great game and one of the first to attempt adhering to official AD&D rules at all (even though it falls short) and it remains enough fun to hold me over...but...after seeing Neverwinter Nights in action it's going to be hard not to think about it. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I played Shadowbane in beta, signed up for the EverQuest for Mac beta (no word as yet), and play both WarCraft II and III on a monthly basis -- but I have never seen a game as incredibly customizable as Neverwinter Nights, or incredibly complex and true to 3rd Edition Rules. This is going to be a very long wait.

Yeah, I guess BGII is kind of on the older side, and I agree that NWN looks amazing I really enjoyed playing it on my friend's PC. I seriously considered building a cheap PC box to play just that game. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Anyway, here's hoping that they push NWN out soon. The screenshots from the BioWare site look like they were pretty far along before they passed it over to MacSoft.
I wonder if Dungeon Siege will be any good?
Cheers,
Dan

Hey gang,
BioWare has an update on their site about the game. At least we know it's still in progress:

Just to clarify, Bioware didn't "pass [NWN] over to MacSoft. They're developing the Mac version, and MacSoft is publishing it.

Thanks Peter, I confess that I was worried Bioware had passed off development too after reading about MacSoft putting the game out--that was rather confusing. I went ahead and signed up at the nwn site, and while I was in there poking around in the Mac forum for the game, I found out there is soon going to be an open tech trial which will precede the game's commercial release--and this tech trial will be available to anyone. It could be a matter of mere days or only a week or so before this happens, so everyone interested should be on the lookout. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
People are speculating the GM will be ready in time for the WWDC.

This is a little off topic, but I have to say that Baldurs Gate II is the best game ever made. Comparing Neverwinter Nights to BGII is almost insulting. I've played and finished both games. Baldurs Gate II is an epic dungeons and dragons game. The beauty is in the story, characters, and world created by the games designers. Neverwinter Nights, though enjoyable, is pretty much a hack and slash RPG which more closely resembles Diablo II. If you are expecting NWN to give you the sort of gaming experiance that BGII does, you are setting yourself up for dissapointment. What would really be increadible would be a Baldurs Gate game based on the NWN graphics engine.

Outside of the preconceived plot of Baldur's Gate games, there is nothing to do. If you have ever played D&D at all, you must realize that for a game to be truly D&D, there has to be a way for games to be created and DM'd--right? I mean, the Baldur's Gate series is still one of my favorites, but it just doesn't compare with Neverwinter Nights when it comes to providing anything like a true AD&D environment. D&D people don't tend to be very impressed with having to play one storyline over and over and over again (all with a pre-determined outcome, at that.)
Are you sure you're not getting the two titles mixed up?

Actually, I'd like to correct myself here. I have only player NWN's single player campaign. Therefore, I was making a comparison of the two games single player campaigns. As I have not played the game online with a dungeonmaster, I am not qualified to commend on this part of the game. I also realize that NWN was meant primarily to be a multiplayer game. I should probably play it the way its meant to be played before dissing it. I still think that the single player campaign left a lot to be desired. Didn't you find that BGII provided quite a versatile playing experiance, within the confines of perconcieved plot ofcourse. It is the most non-linear campaign I have ever played.

Yes, I would agree that the single player campaign in Baldur's Gate is second to none that I have played (although WarCraft III is right up there, too.) I have played Neverwinter Nights on my cousin's PC, multiplayer mode, and you would be delighted with the level of role play that the online gamers achieve with NWN. This is one example of an online game done right. While, if handled poorly, you could still encounter that bland sort of hack and slash experience, what I have seen are a lot of people totally into their characters. You will love it if you get into a multiplayer game.

I have a lot of pc using gamer online friends. Many of them tried out NwN, some still play it, but most have long dumped it. The games most pc users I know are looking forward to are Star Wars Galaxies and World of Warcraft.
I'm not too interested in the the warcraft, BG type of games anyway, but I refuse to buy any Bioware game, just becasue the way they treated the mac users over NwN. Basically, they maintained the promise of simultaneous delivery till 2 weeks before release. I don't know how much the mac presales helped to boost NwN to go gold before release, but it sure didn't hurt. To add insult to injury they packaged the fact that they left mac users in the dust as "good news" by saying the mac version would be out by September. Bioware has lost all respect and credibility in my eyes.
